As She Rises aims to personalize the elusive magnitude of climate change and brings together local poets and activists from throughout North America to depict the effects of climate change on their home and their people. In the latest season of As She Rises, we're traversing the Colorado River Basin downstream, understanding water through a new lens and centering stories of resilience in the face of the drought. We’re starting our journey just south of Lake Powell, in the Navajo Nation. Over the years, the U.S. government has signed a number of treaties with the Navajo Nation, promising certain amounts of water, and water infrastructure. But, as they struggle to reallocate water in the face of drought, the government still tends to leave indigenous communities out of the conversation. Poet Kinsale Drake reads her poem, “after Sacred Water,” about how the U.S. government drowned an ecosystem to create a dam that is now shrinking fast. Emma Robbins, director of the Navajo Water Project, explains how her organization ensures households have running water, and that the Navajo Nation has a seat at the table. Inherited host Shaylyn Martos sits down with storyteller Keerti Gopal, whose sound-rich story “Island of People” was a closer look into the climate resilience and cultural memory of the Tao, and how the effects of climate crisis and industrialization of Lanyu is changing their land forever. Together, they talk about Keerti’s experiences in multimedia journalism and building community in Taiwan. Keerti Gopal is a multimedia journalist, documentary filmmaker, and National Geographic Explorer. In 2021, she graduated from Northwestern University, where she organized with the youth-led Sunrise Movement Chicago and researched youth climate activism. She then moved to Taiwan for her Fulbright-National Geographic Storytelling Fellowship, where she documented stories of climate action and resilience through photo, film, and written media. She’s now based in Brooklyn, NY and has completed fellowships at Inside Climate News, The Lever, and Solutions Journalism Network. She is a graduate of One World Media’s Global Short Docs Forum for international filmmakers. Keerti is particularly interested in climate justice solutions and storytelling that center frontline communities and marginalized expertise. Inherited host Shaylyn Martos sits down with storyteller Vi Pham, who reflected on her own family history to better understand the effect of Australia’s immigration policy on climate-impacted Pasifika communities in Ep. 7, “Home and Away.” Together, they talk about Vi’s work in the legal system, the experience of putting together her story, and her goals for the future.  Thuy Vi Pham (she/they) is a queer second generation Vietnamese-Australian, living in the city of Meanjin (Brisbane, Queensland). She has just completed a dual degree in Law and Ecology, and is passionate about access to justice within colonial legal systems. Vi entered audio storytelling through her local radio station, 4ZZZ Community Radio, where she is an announcer for the science show, Know Idea. Each week, she can be found reporting the latest research on a myriad of topics including robot design, urban wildlife, and the search for extraterrestrial life.
