38:13Science is pretty clear about this one thing. To have a long, healthy life, the MOST important intervention is exercise, and specifically weight-bearing exercise. Today I have my dear friend, Kelley Workman, master personal trainer, and midlife woman herself back with me. As many of you know, Kelley is my personal trainer and has improved my health dramatically with some very simple lifestyle changes that she will discuss today. Not only does exercise improve things that might sound obvious like osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes; but we are now learning that exercise is also very important in decreasing the risk of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as many cancers. By maintaining and building muscle mass, as well as protecting our cardiovascular system, we simply get fewer diseases and live longer. Kelley will also explain the importance of eating enough protein in order to support all muscles and how small changes in your daily nutrition plan can make a dramatic difference to not only how you feel now- but to long and how well you will live in the later decades of life. 39:08It's finally here! Like many of you, I'm a brand new empty nester having sent my last two kids to college this month. I've been preparing myself for this moment for years, but now faced with the reality of the situation I have put together some hopefully helpful thoughts about how to not only survive, but thrive in this unique life transition. I'm not going to tell you all the reasons why an empty nest is great and rosy- even though that is also true! Today I'm focusing on some of the difficult moments and recognizing that this can be truly painful at times, and sharing some thoughts that have helped me to feel less alone, at least so far!
My Brain Aneurysm Surgery | The Test that Saved My Life!
29:35Most of us don't think much about brain aneurysms, but 2-5% of us have an asymptotic brain aneurysm, which is a weakening of the wall of a critical blood vessel, often not detected until it ruptures. Ruptured aneurysms are a relatively common cause of stroke or even sudden death, but can be quite easily treated in a non invasive way if caught prior to rupture. Today I'm sharing my personal health story following an incidental finding of a significant brain aneurysm, which was treated last week by Dr. Omar Tanweer at Baylor College of Medicine. Just a few days after the surgery I am back at work and feeling 100% fine! Educating ourselves and our families about aneurysms is critical and can prevent permanent brain injury and death. This video not only follows my story, but also includes an interview with Dr. Tanweer talking about aneurysm symptoms, risk factors and treatment options, which is something all of us need to know!

How to Reduce Your Risk of Alzheimer's Disease | Empowering Midlife Wellness

Today I'll be talking about lifestyle changes, supplements, and other interventions that have been shown to decrease the incidence of Alzheimer's, and also discussing the conflicting information around the subject of hormone replacement and Alzheimer's disease. I'll also be discussing the APOE gene and how knowing your APOE status can help you to understand your risk and act on it.
8 Reasons to Consider Limiting Alcohol | Empowering Midlife Wellness
26:30Today I’m sharing all about my relationship with alcohol and why I decided to limit my own alcohol use. I’ll be discussing many reasons why alcohol is just not good for our health. We all know that excessive alcohol can damage the liver, but most of us are not aware that even moderate alcohol use is associated with an increased risk of many cancers (not just liver cancer), and has even been linked to dementia, gut dysbiosis and other serious issues including damaging relationships and causing accidents! Even if you don't consider yourself to be a “problem drinker,” plenty of research supports limiting alcohol significantly if we want to increase our health-span and improve our quality of life. I challenge you to start by taking an alcohol inventory, and to be very honest about how much you are consuming and how it might be creating problems that we could avoid.

33:55When talking about women's health, we cannot ignore that the most common killer of both men and women is heart disease, and we are 10 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer -- yet traditional medicine places very little emphasis on preventative tests especially for women. Today I'm going to share some simple and relatively inexpensive tests that every person should ask their doctor to do in order to establish her risk of heart disease, and to allow early detection of problems before symptoms would lead you to the doctor. The basic lipid panel that most doctors offer during your annual exam is not nearly enough! Today I'll teach you what to ask for, and some of these tests you can order yourself. Of course, lifestyle changes, including keeping a healthy weight, exercising, not smoking and keeping blood pressure optimal are all incredibly important- but I will explain why doing a heart scan is arguably more important than doing a mammogram, as well as some simple blood tests that can give you actionable information that could literally add decades of healthy years to your life!
