Bridging Cancer Care and Heart Health: A New Clinical Practice Statement for Cardio-Oncology

Upon first clinical presentation it looked certain that Jackie Ellis was suffering from ICI myocarditis, a rare but deadly condition. Upon further evaluation Dr. Joshua Mitchell determined this was not in fact the case. This allowed her oncology team to continue her on the life saving cancer therapy she needed. This is cardio-oncology care at its best. The goal is to mitigate cardiovascular complications in order to keep treating the cancer!

The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and IC-OS jointly published a paper titled: “Prevention and management of cardiovascular disease in adults with cancer: an International Cardio-Oncology Society (IC-OS) and Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) clinical practice statement”. This is a critical contribution to the literature because it was produced by and for the hematology/oncology community. Historically, cardio-oncology has been dominated by cardiologists. We are seeking to address this by working closely with the hematology/oncology community on various projects including publications. Joshua Levenson MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He studied Chemistry at Amherst College followed by medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and internal medicine residency at The University of Michigan. He returned to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for Cardiology Fellowship prior to joining faculty in 2017. Dr Levenson is a noninvasive cardiologist, cardiac imager, and clinician educator. He serves as Director of UPMC’s Center for Cardio-Oncology, co-Director of Noninvasive at UPMC Shadyside, and Associate Director of UPMC’s Cardiology Fellowship.
