What if the reason your brand feels scattered, your referrals are misaligned, and you keep attracting clients that drain you is not a marketing problem - but an identity problem? Robyn Young has spent eight years building brands for Google, UCLA, and founders across every industry while quietly hiding from her own. When the business she thought was her exit strategy collapsed, she finally put herself through her own framework. One income stream became five. And what she built - the Brand Universe - is the framework that changed everything. This episode is for the woman who has been putting it off long enough.

SUMMARY & GUEST INTRO

If you have ever walked away from a brand strategy session with a mission statement, a vision, a set of values, and a content calendar - and still felt like nothing had actually changed - Robyn Young has a name for what happened to you. You got a box. Not a brand. Robyn is the founder of Young and Co, a brand strategy and creative studio based in Los Angeles. She has worked with Google, UCLA, Verishop, and Industrious, and her framework - the Brand Universe - is built on a single idea: your brand is built from the inside out around a point of view so specific and so true that competitors can copy your tactics but they can never copy your conviction. She is also the author of Build Your Brand Universe. And yes, she spent eight years building brands for everyone else before she finally built one for herself. This conversation is the one she spent eight years earning the right to have.

INSIDE THE EPISODE

  • Your Company Is Not Your Brand. For the corporate woman who has built her entire professional identity around where she works and who she has worked with - Robyn's opening reframe is the most important thing in the episode. If you are only ever depending on who you have worked with, you are in the shallowest, noisiest part of the pool. The day that company's name gets ripped away, who are you?
  • She Was Hiding Behind Her Own Agency for Eight Years. Robyn was hitting consistent six figures and still stuck. She started a second business as an exit strategy. It collapsed. She was bleeding cash and wondering whether she would have to rebuild a resume for the first time in nearly a decade. The moment she put herself through her own Brand Universe framework, everything changed.
  • Saying Yes to Everything Hurt Her Brand. Most people think saying yes is safe. Robyn says it is how you end up invisible. When she said yes to everything out of fear, the referrals that came in were misaligned. People did not know where to place her. A brand with a real point of view gives you permission to say no - and the referrals it attracts are the ones that actually fit.
  • Demographics Pigeonhole You. Psychographics Set You Free. Erica has wrestled for years with the pull to 'go bigger' and market to everyone beyond women. Robyn's reframe: the problem is not that Erica's audience is too narrow. It is that she has been defining it by a demographic instead of a mindset. Who you are not for is often the clearest path to understanding who you are for.
  • What Are You Fighting? One of the eight components of Robyn's Brand Point of View framework is the monster: what convention, wrong, or idea in your industry are you standing against? This is not political. It is about finding the thing your brand has a real stake in - the hill you are willing to die on. That stake is what makes a brand distinct.
  • Do the Exact Opposite of Trends. For every Jessie Jane, there are a million people who have been yapping into a camera for years and are nowhere. Trends are about fitting in. Brands are built by standing out. The best move is to look at what everyone in your field is doing and do the exact opposite. At least you would be an original.
  • AI Cannot Give You Your Brand Identity. If you go to AI without a brand point of view, it will give you something - but you will never have conviction in it. You cannot outsource identity. Once you have the strength and identity, AI can compound it. But the deep work has to come first.
