The practice of loving-kindness goes against the human instinct. From the evolutionary perspective, humans, like other living organisms, are programmed to survive and thrive despite the emotional, psychological, and social costs that may ensue.

Loving Kindness (Metta in Pali) is one of four sublime qualities that can be learned and cultivated by any human being as an antidote to strong emotional charge, i.e., anger, hatred, envy, jealousy, ill-will, etc.

There are several benefits of practicing loving kindness daily. A discourse named "The Benefits of loving kindness (metta-nisansa sutta) describes 11 positive outcomes of this practice. Loving-kindness enables a person to fall asleep effortlessly, wake up peacefully, and avoid nightmares during sleep, which should motivate us to embrace this noble attitude.
