Alan Stein Jr. (@AlanSteinJr) is a world-renowned coach, speaker author and a father of three aspiring young athletes. He spent 15+ years working the highest performing basketball players on the planet, from Kevin Durant to Kobe Bryant, and now teaches audiences how to utilize the same strategies in business that elite athletes use to perform at a world-class level. In or conversation today, we discuss what motivated him and Rich to write this book, why its not helpful for parents to coach from the sidelines, what to say to our kids post game or on the ride home, parent engagement strategies he has learned from coaching mentors, and the lessons he has learned parenting his own children.

This week’s podcast is also brought to you by our friends at Sports Refund. Many of you probably buy trip insurance, every winter I buy ski pass insurance, to make sure that if I get injured I can get my money back on that expensive investment. Well, many of us spend thousands of dollars on our kids sports club fees, but what if they get hurt? In many cases you cannot get your money back, but now with Sports Refund you can. And it’s not just for long term broken bones or torn ligaments. It is only a 14 day waiting period, so you even get a refund if you roll that ankle or pull a hammy! For just pennies on the dollar, you can make sure that if your child gets sick or injured and misses a month or more you can get your money back, or your club can get paid. It’s a great product, just go to www.sportsrefund.com/game and get your free quote, and if it sounds good you can either get your club to sign up, or you can purchase on your own.

#256 Joe Towne, Actor and Performance Coach: Developing a Winning Mindset, Working Through Adversity, Self Talk, and Learning from Failure

    58:23

Joe Towne (@MeJoeTowne) is an actor, producer, writer and performance coach and mentor for numerous athletes, actors, broadcast professionals and more. His professional journey has taken him from coast to coast and across the Atlantic. He graduated with a BA in Theater from The University of Southern California and interned at 20th Century Fox. Joe then headed back east, where he pursued a career in theater and embarked on a 30-year journey that took him to the UK and back. Along the way, he studied at NYC’s Stella Adler with June Stein and with Gary Austin, founder and creator of The Groundlings. Some of Joe’s most acclaimed roles include an “unfailingly imaginative!” 30-minute Star Wars Trilogy recap that was featured on BBC radio and performed live for George Lucas at Skywalker Ranch, Mr. Pink in Edinburgh Fringe Fest’s highly rated production of Reservoir Dogs and opposite Rebel Wilson in the New Line feature film Isn’t It Romantic. We brought Joe on the podcast because athletes and those who lead them have so much to learn from people in theater, who experience way more failure than successes, who struggle with adversity and must overcome negative self talk, and so many other areas of the inner game. Joe gives us some great tools and ideas for being mentally strong and learning from our toughest moments. #250 Rob Gray, PhD: How to Teach Movement, Improve Skill Acquisition, and Become a More Effective Coach

    1:03:52

Rob Gray (@ShakeyWaits) is a professor at Arizona State University who has been conducting research on and teaching courses related to perceptual-motor skill for over 25 years. He is also author of the incredible new book How We Learn to Move: A Revolution in the Way We Coach and Practice Sports Skills.  He received his MS and PhD from York University in Canada with a focus on the visual control of movement. An important aspect of his work has been applying basic theory to address real-world challenges which he has done in positions with Nissan Motor Corp, the US Air Force, serving as an expert witness for driving accident cases, and consultant roles with several sports teams and organizations. In 2015, he started the Perception & Action Podcast (www.perceptionaction.com) to help bridge the gap between theory and the field. With over 350 episodes and 2 million downloads, it has become a critical resource for individuals working in areas including coaching, talent development, training and rehabilitation. In our discussion today, Rob and John talk about the myth of the one size fits all technique, the benefits of training variability and small-sided games, why it makes no sense to gather in groups and then practice as individuals, and much more. He leverages the knowledge gained from the various sports he has coached to help create multi-sport, player-focused training programs that assist athletes in not only developing solid skill foundations but great off-field skills to help them succeed in life. In our conversation today we touch on a variety of topics, ranging from developments in coach education to whether sport is fundamentally good or not. We talk about some of the best things we each have learned on our respective podcasts, and how we implement them in our own daily coaching.  You can follow Stuart's work at the following links: Website: http://www.thetalentequation.co.uk/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stuartarmstrong/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/stu_arm Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetalentequation.co.uk  Today’s Podcast is brought to you by the 2021 Way of Champions Conference. #247 Manchester United's Tony Whelan and Tom Statham: Our Most Important Job is Protecting Childhood

    1:02:49

Tom Statham and Tony Whelan have a combined 60 plus years coaching and leading the young players in Manchester United’s Academy. Tony started out there as a schoolboy, eventually signing professional terms and playing for Man United, Manchester City, and in the US in the old NASL. He has been at United since 1990 in a coaching capacity, Head of Academy Coaching, and currently in an advisory role. With experience working under managers from Sir Matt Busby to Sir Alex Ferguson, Tony is deeply rooted in the history and culture of United, and has guided hundreds of players from the youth ranks to the pros. Tom Statham is a long time friend of the podcast, and has been with Manchester United for nearly 30 years, currently working with the U9-U11s. Current Manchester United players such as Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay all started as young players with Tom and other coaches at the Cliff, United's legendary training ground. In our conversation today, we dive deeply into the history of the club, and the vital importance of youth coaches in protracting the childhood of our young athletes. We discuss being a life coach first, and a sport coach second. And we talk about the massive impact we can have on the lives of our young athletes on and off the field. This is a very special conversation for me, and reaffirms my belief that our influence is never neutral. Today’s Podcast is brought to you by the 2021 Way of Champions Conference. Become a Podcast Champion! This weeks podcast is also sponsored by our Patreon Podcast Champions.
