    1:06:11

This week we welcome back Stuart Armstrong (@stu_arm) to the podcast. Stuart is the Head of Coaching for Sport England and the host of one of our favorite podcasts, The Talent Equation., He spends his days helping to elevate the coaching profession, develop educational pathways for grassroots coaches, and so much more. This is his third solo visit to the podcast (Episodes 16 and 113). Prior to Sport England, he was the Player Development Manager for the Rugby Football Union. He is one of the world’s top experts on player development pathways and skill acquisition, and has helped thousands of coaches in the UK create better learning environments and develop deeper relationships with their players. His sports coaching experience is in golf, cricket, field hockey, rugby, and soccer, and to this day he is coaching 14 year old boys in rugby and cricket. He leverages the knowledge gained from the various sports he has coached to help create multi-sport, player-focused training programs that assist athletes in not only developing solid skill foundations but great off-field skills to help them succeed in life. In our conversation today we touch on a variety of topics, ranging from developments in coach education to whether sport is fundamentally good or not. #247 Manchester United's Tony Whelan and Tom Statham: Our Most Important Job is Protecting Childhood

    1:02:49

Tom Statham and Tony Whelan have a combined 60 plus years coaching and leading the young players in Manchester United’s Academy. Tony started out there as a schoolboy, eventually signing professional terms and playing for Man United, Manchester City, and in the US in the old NASL. He has been at United since 1990 in a coaching capacity, Head of Academy Coaching, and currently in an advisory role. With experience working under managers from Sir Matt Busby to Sir Alex Ferguson, Tony is deeply rooted in the history and culture of United, and has guided hundreds of players from the youth ranks to the pros. Tom Statham is a long time friend of the podcast, and has been with Manchester United for nearly 30 years, currently working with the U9-U11s. Current Manchester United players such as Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay all started as young players with Tom and other coaches at the Cliff, United's legendary training ground. In our conversation today, we dive deeply into the history of the club, and the vital importance of youth coaches in protracting the childhood of our young athletes. We discuss being a life coach first, and a sport coach second. And we talk about the massive impact we can have on the lives of our young athletes on and off the field. This is a very special conversation for me, and reaffirms my belief that our influence is never neutral. Today’s Podcast is brought to you by the 2021 Way of Champions Conference. #242 Coach Jerome Gumbs, Founder of Empower Me Academy: How to Create a Transformational Life Experience Through Sports, Develop Leaders, and Focus on Everyday Excellence

    1:08:24

Coach Jerome Gumbs is a former collegiate and professional basketball player and the founder of Empower Me Academy (www.empowermeacademy.net). Founded in 2013, Empower ME Academy provides a holistic training experience. Student-Athletes develop better basketball skills — and in addition, improve their attitude, commitment, and discipline. The goal is for their Student-Athletes to become well-rounded leaders and adults, successful on the court and in life. As Coach Gumbs like to say, 'Everything we do, we do with excellence." Many organizations pay lip service to providing a truly transformational sports experience, but as you listen to this you will see that Coach Gumbs and his staff deliver to the kids of San Francisco, and hope to spread this type of programming far and wide. They are truly about mentorship, coaching with heart, and developing not only better basketball players, but better people. In our episode this week Jerry and John discuss with Coach Gumbs his life journey, the coaches and experiences who have shaped him, why he started Empower Me Academy, and why this needs to be the future of sports.  Connect with him at www.EmpowerMeAcademy.net Check out this amazing documentary about his work here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pee7l-k1P_E Do you want to access all of our videos from the 2021 Way of Champions Conference? #241 Ben Sherwood, CEO of MOJO, on the Biggest Issue in Youth Sports and the Need to Help Recreational Coaches Up Their Game

    54:22

Ben Sherwood, founder and CEO of MOJO, and has coached his sons for the last 12 years in four sports. During that time, he also served as president of the Disney ABC Television Group and president of ABC News. Like many recreational coaches, he noticed that there were few if any resources to help the busy parent coach as he or she travelled from work to the practice field. So, he founded MOJO (@yougotmojo). Today we speak about the founding of the company, the need to help our recreational coaches more so than our top level coaches, and how we can make sports for children age 4-14 better.  MOJO is on a mission to make youth sports more fun and magical for everyone – one kid, one coach, one family at a time. Launched in February 2021, MOJO is a robust digital platform that empowers parents who coach youth sports to bring world-class training to the largest pool of players in the world – kids aged 13 and under. Winner of the Webby Award for Best Sports App of 2021, MOJO believes that youth sports has the power to transform lives, not just for the kids on the field but the coaches and parents on the sidelines. MOJO is committed to equity, inclusion and helping to level the playing field for kids everywhere. Anson Dorrance loves competition, and has spent decades understanding and creating relentless competitors in his teams. As the University of North Carolina Women's Soccer Coach, he has won over 1000 games, 21 NCAA Championships, and also led the US Women's National Team to the 1991 World Cup Championship. He has published 3 books (Vision of a Champion, The Man Watching, and Training Soccer Champions) and has a wonderful podcast where he interviews the best of the best: Vision of a Champion Podcast: https://ansondorrancesoccer.com/podcast/ He joined us as a presenter at the 2021 Way of Champions Conference, and we wanted to share this extraordinary session with all of our podcast listeners. #239 Oli Gage, Canadian Premier League Director of Football, on Talent ID, Player Recruitment, and Ensuring no Player Fall Through the Cracks

    57:21

Oliver Gage is the Director of Football at the Canadian Premier League and has a growing reputation for basing his footballing philosophy on a successful evidence-based approach to the sport and player development. Previously Head of Performance at the University of Virginia and Head of Performance Analysis and Technical Recruitment at Houston Dynamo, Oliver joined the Canadian Premier League as Head of On-Field Performance and Recruitment in 2019 before becoming Director of Football a year later. Oliver is also the son of former Aston Villa, Wimbledon and Sheffield United defender Kevin Gage. Kevin is regarded as a legend at the latter two clubs. Oliver is among the most dynamic and forward-thinking sporting figureheads in North America and has been credited with the inception of an innovative transfer policy, overhauling player recruitment and enhancing the quality of football within the division. The transfer policy implemented mandated teams sign four of their seven allowed foreign footballers through a league-run recruitment process that approved or rejected certain players, proactively recruited on behalf of clubs and offered teams players the league had secured. Although controversial and unique, other leagues have started to consider introducing a similar strategy following numerous success stories. In our conversation today we cover talent identification, player recruitment, surviving COVID as a new league, and ensuring that players are not overlooked during the critical ages of 16-22.  This episode is sponsored by GoodSport!
