You can plan an engaging podcast episode, cover all the right points, and still leave your listeners to make connections that feel obvious to you because you already know how all the pieces fit together.

This happens easily when you know your subject matter inside out. You can move from one idea to the next without noticing the steps you’ve skipped, leaving your listener to join the dots herself. And if your podcast is meant to help someone understand a problem, reconsider what she believes, or make a decision, those missing connections matter.

In this episode, we’re looking at how to structure a podcast episode around your listener’s thinking rather than a list of everything you want to say. We’ll talk about why knowing your expert topic so well can make it harder to spot where your listener might get lost, why a perfectly good episode can still leave her doing too much of the thinking herself and the simple question I now use when planning my own episodes.

You’ll hear:

  • The difference between organising podcast talking points and structuring an episode around your listener.
  • How your expertise can make it harder to notice the connections you’re asking your audience to make for themselves.
  • How to plan the progression of your listener’s thinking from the moment she presses play to the decision or understanding you want to help her reach.
  • The question to ask when deciding whether a story, example, teaching point, or piece of advice actually belongs in the episode.
  • Why your call to action should feel like part of the episode rather than something added at the end
