Welcome to today’s episode of To Psychology and Beyond where we are thrilled to welcome Professor Louise Sharpe who joins us to talk about her Universityexperiences, the incredible career she has spanning both research andclinical work, the work she is currently doing, and her advice to students formanaging well-being at university.Professor Sharpe has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, and a Master of Psychology here at the University of Sydney and a PhD from the Royal Holloway University London, and was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia in 2019. Professor Sharpe is the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Research Training at the University of Sydney, and Professor of Clinical Psychology.Professor Sharpe is the recipient of numerous awards including the Ian M. Campbell Memorial Prize from the Australian Psychological Society in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the scientific and professional status of Clinical psychology in Australia, and the Distinguished Career Award from the Australian Association of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.Professor Sharpe is a clinical psychologist by training and is an internationally recognised expert in health psychology with particular expertise in cognitive behavioural treatments for patients living with chronic physical illness and how people adjust to illness. In this episode, we welcome Associate Professor Michael Bowen who talks to us about his undergraduate experiences and how they lead him to the impactful work he is doing in the School of Psychology at the University of Sydney developing novel therapeutics. Associate Professor Michael Bowen is a neuroscientist and psychopharmacologist at the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre and School of Psychology. His research is focused on discovering and developing novel therapeutics for substance use disorders and social impairments in brain disorders.He is the co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Kinoxis Therapeutics. Kinoxis was created to commercialize KNX100, a novel molecule that A/Prof Bowen discovered with colleagues at the University of Sydney. Haryana Dhillon is a behavioural scientist and psycho-oncologist at the University of Sydney, working with people who are living with cancer or working through cancer survivorship. Haryanan co-leads the survivorship research group and is a director of the centre for medical psychology and evidence-based decision making in the school of psychology at the university of Sydney. They chair the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Psycho-oncology Co-operative Research Group (PoCoG) and is a Board member of Cancer Council NSW.Haryana has more than 25 years experience in cancer clinical research across a range of investigator-initiated cancer clinical trials. Her research interests are broad encompassing cancer survivorship, health literacy, and interventions for survivorship, symptom management, and psycho-oncology. Haryana is the recipient of several awards and honours, and is a well-respected lecturer in several undergraduate psychology units of study. In this episode we chat with Dr Rebecca Pinkus about her undergraduate and postgraduate experiences in Canada in comparison with undergraduate life in Sydney. Dr Pinkus takes us through the importance of building and maintaining relationships at university, and the impact of social comparison.Dr Pinkus is a senior lecturer and Honours Coordinator in the school of psychology at the University of Sydney. Dr Pinkus’ research focuses on social cognition within the context of close relationships – in particular how individuals balance concerns about the self with concerns about the relationship. Dr Pinkus’ research interests also include body image and weight stigma. Dr Pinkus completed a Bachelor Science (Honours) at the University of Western Ontario, followed by a Masters and PhD at the University of Toronto, and a postdoc at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
