In August 2021, Virginia Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against Prince Andrew in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleging that he sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions when she was 17 years old. Giuffre claimed that she was trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein and forced to engage in sexual acts with Prince Andrew in London, New York, and on Epstein's private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The lawsuit accused Prince Andrew of battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, asserting that his actions constituted sexual offenses under applicable laws.

Prince Andrew consistently denied Giuffre's allegations and sought to have the lawsuit dismissed. However, in January 2022, a federal judge ruled that the case could proceed to trial. Facing the prospect of a public trial, Prince Andrew opted to settle the lawsuit out of court in February 2022. As part of the settlement, he agreed to make a substantial donation to Giuffre's charity supporting victims' rights, though he did not admit to any wrongdoing. The exact terms of the settlement, including the financial amount, were not publicly disclosed.
