We tend to treat limited time and energy as the enemy – something to push against, work around, or refuse to acknowledge. But embracing constraints doesn't slow you down or hamper your ambition. I'd argue it forces clarity, creativity, and progress in ways that ignoring them never will. Sometimes we have a goal that's worth pushing hard for. We live in a culture that glorifies the hustle, and early in my legal career, I was fully bought in. So when a senior associate I deeply respected criticized constant weekend work as poor case management, it stopped me in my tracks. Oftentimes, planning gets categorized as less valuable than the work we should be doing. A client said it like it was just a fact: if she pushed back on new work, those clients would take their business elsewhere and never come back.
