China is the largest BEV market in the world with over 2 million units sold and over 150% growth rate in 2021. In this episode, Hans Beck talks to Cheng Xie and Chen Chen, two colleagues from our office in China, how sustainability looks like in the world’s largest automotive emerging market. Some of the main insights are that besides BEV, HEV/PHEV also plays an important role in the market. Competition is intense with competitors coming from three different OEM group. In past years, battery manufacturers have successfully improved the capacity and performance of battery cells. In order to become a competitive cell supplier in the upcoming years, the focus needs to be directed towards improving operational performance and reliability in line with automotive quality standards, for example manufacturing end of line defects in parts-per-million ranges. Building scalable operations will be key to surviving the upcoming consolidation in the battery environment.
