PADRES POSTCAST: MIKE SHILDT Manages to Blow Late San Diego Padres Lead in 2-1 L to Cincinnati Reds
Pinch-hitter Bryce Johnson (?) struck out with the tying run on 3rd base to end the game, Mike Shildt wasted 7 shutout innings from Nick Pivetta, and the San Diego Padres blew their 2nd game in a row, 2-1 to the Cincinnati Reds at Petco Park.
The loss leaves the Padres 3 games beind the LA Dodgers in the NL West.
Gavin Sheets led off the 9th with a double. Ramon Laureano popped out, Jackson Merrill flew to deep center, moving Iglesias to 3rd base.
Johnson pinch-hit for Mason McCoy, who was a defensive replacement that took Ryan O’Hearn out of the game in the 8th inning.
Mike Shildt had earlier inexplicably taken Pivetta out of the game after 7 innings, and even more inexplicably brought Kyle Hart into the game.
Pivetta, your best pitcher all season, had thrown just 101 pitches in 7 innings, and had retired the side in order in the 7th. The 3 hitters coming up were 1-6 against him in the game.
So enter Kyle Hart. TJ Friedl reached on a bunt single with 1 out, stole 2nd and later scored on Elly De La Cruz’s RBI single off Adrian Morejon to right field, just beating a beautiful throw from Fernando Tatis Jr. De La Cruz stole 2nd and scored on a bloop single by pinch-hitter Miguel Andujar.
Fernando Tatis Jr.’s solo home run in the bottom of the 5th inning has given Nick Pivetta and the Padres a 1-0 lead over the Reds.
Ramon Laureano made a leaping catch to rob Austin Hays of a game-tying homer in the 7th.
Pivetta went 7 shutout innings, giving up only 4 hits while walking just 1 and striking out 8.
