In the rural province of Entre Ríos, Argentina, a family vanished without a trace. On January 12, 2002, Rubén “Mencho” Gill, his partner Margarita Gallegos and their four children spent the afternoon with friends, returned to the farm where they lived, and were never seen again. Their belongings were left behind: clothes, documents and even Margarita’s paycheck. They had no vehicle and no known conflicts. Their employer waited three months to notify relatives. Years later the police searched the ranch and found strange clues including traces of blood but no bodies, no suspects, no explanations were ever found. More than twenty years later, the case remains one of Argentina’s most unsettling mysteries: six people gone in one night with no answers. Biathlon bronze medalist Kari Swenson was on a training run near Big Sky, Montana in the summer of 1984 when she encountered two men with malicious intentions. Kari had just made history with her biathlon relay team when she was abducted and held captive for 18 hours by two self-proclaimed survivalists who wanted to make her a “wife”. In August 2014, 19 year old Heather Mack was on vacation with her mother, Sheila von Weise in Bali, Indonesia. Little did Sheila know, Heather had purchased her boyfriend, 21 year old Tommy Schaefer, a plane ticket to Bali. When Schaefer arrived, the couple executed a plan they had been concocting: they were going to kill Heather’s mother to get her inheritance. The West Memphis Three case remains one of the most debated criminal cases in modern U.S. history, marked by conflicting interpretations of evidence, questions about investigative methods, and ongoing disagreement about guilt or innocence. While Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. were convicted in 1994, years of scrutiny have raised concerns about the reliability of key evidence, including Misskelley’s confession and disputed forensic findings. The emergence of alternative suspects and new DNA testing further complicated the case, leading to their release in 2011 through Alford pleas while maintaining their innocence. Ultimately, the case highlights broader issues within the justice system, including the risks of wrongful conviction, the influence of public perception, and the importance of thorough, unbiased investigations. The West Memphis Three case centers on the brutal 1993 murders of three eight-year-old boys—Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers—in West Memphis, Arkansas. Police arrested three teenagers, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr., who became known as the West Memphis Three. In part 2 we'll go over Jesse and Damien’s trials and how the prosecution argued the killings were part of a satanic ritual, a claim influenced by the era’s “Satanic Panic.” Jesse did confess to the murders after a long interrogation, which became a key piece of evidence, though he later recanted the confession and it’s been heavily debated over the years.
