Over the past decade or so, white supremacist groups with names like the Patriot Front and the Atomwaffen Division have been quietly recruiting new members online, spreading propaganda and conducting paramilitary training exercises across North America. One of these groups is called The Base and, in the summer of 2019, Scott Payne wanted to become a member. But Scott wasn’t a neo nazi or a rightwing extremist.
