Episode 50: Spirituality in the Marketplace

In this podcast episode, Amoda Maa is in conversation with her host and husband, Kavi, talking about how humanity has lost the inner connection with the divine and what it means to reclaim our divinity.  Together they touch in topics such as the externalization of God in religion, the impact on individuals and society of being disconnected from our God-essence, and the possibility of remembering the wholeness of God within as our essential nature.

Unlike in previous ages when immersion into the spiritual life was a total devotion by becoming a monk or living on the metaphorical mountaintop, or else took place in the latter years of one’s life when householder duties were over, today spirituality has filtered into the mainstream culture.  Amoda Maa is in conversation with host and husband, Kavi, talking about whether this spiritual filtering into the everyday life has changed the nature of the spiritual path and if there are any obstacles and/or benefits to the marriage of the spiritual and the secular.

In this episode, Kavi invites Amoda Maa to discuss the role of the body in awakening. Together they explore how to reconcile the deepest realization of true nature (the formlessness of Being) with the unavoidable fact that we experience ourselves as form (body, sensations, perceptions). They also discuss whether the well-being of the body has an impact on the spiritual journey, and whether awakening has a direct impact on the body.

In this episode, Kavi invites Amoda Maa to explore the essence of Jiddu Krishnamurti’s teachings by asking her to comment on his famous statement “The difference between you and me is, I don’t mind what happens.” The conversation includes an exploration of how the mind habitually labels and categorizes all experience, how craving and aversion are a by-product of this, and how the prison of an "inner divided state" is created. The conversation also includes an examination of the difference between “not minding” and “not caring”, and whether the mind has any useful function at all. 

In this episode, host Kavi is in conversation with Amoda Maa about the parallel between the journey of spiritual awakening and the journey of life between birth and death. Together they explore such questions as, how does ego death relate to physical death, what is the value of meeting death consciously before we die, and why is there so much fear around death.
