People like Jeffrey Epstein can use a broad mix of assets and financial structures to make wealth harder to trace, value, or connect to a single beneficial owner. Real estate is especially useful because properties can be held through LLCs, trusts, partnerships, or offshore entities rather than directly in an individual’s name, while luxury homes can also serve as repositories of enormous value. High-end art and collectibles offer another layer of opacity because they are portable, privately traded, difficult to value precisely, and often bought and sold through intermediaries. Private aircraft, yachts, shell companies, foundations, and closely held businesses can all serve similar purposes by separating the person from the asset on paper and creating layers between the original source of funds and where the wealth ultimately sits.

Hidden or offshore accounts add yet another level of complexity, especially when combined with nominees, trusts, multiple jurisdictions, and banks willing to move money through complicated structures. That does not automatically mean every such arrangement is illegal, but the same tools used for legitimate tax planning and asset protection can also be abused to conceal ownership, disguise transfers, evade scrutiny, or frustrate investigators trying to reconstruct a financial network. Epstein’s finances drew particular attention because of the sheer number of entities, accounts, properties, foundations, and international relationships associated with him, making it difficult to understand where all of his money came from and where it went. In cases like his, following the money is often less about finding one secret account than unraveling an entire architecture built to make wealth fragmented, mobile, and difficult to see as a single connected system.
