"In August 2022, the Adams County, Ohio Sheriff's Department raided Foreman's home on suspicion of drug trafficking and kidnapping, which turned out to be false. Foreman criticized the police for causing $20,000 in damages to his home and for a missing $400 from $5,000 that they had seized.[2][3] The album mocks the officers involved in the raid in songs such as the titular track (a parody of The Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk") and "Will You Help Me Repair My Door", the music videos of which garnered 6 and 12 million views respectively on YouTube.[4][5] The album led to a defamation suit against Foreman by the officers involved in the raid. In 1965, right at the cusp of the British Invasion, The Kinks were 'informally' blacklisted from performing in the USA. While this meant that they couldn't share in the spoils of that gigantic music movement, it also meant that had time to incubate in England... And I don't know if it was some sort of cabin fever of being stuck at home, but they grew to love their shire of a home. They started noticing all the changes urbanization was bringing and how the villages were less and less relevant in the grand scheme of things. The simple ways were disappearing... But The Kinks were going to preserve some of that in the form of their concept album dedicated to all things British. At long last, we are finally discussing one of the most important bands of the last century--one of the pillars upon which modern music stands, and one of the funkiest to do it: Sly and the Family Stone. Born out of the struggles of the civil rights movement and the explosion of psychedelia, The Family Stone's members showed a perfect blend of multiracial unity and gender equality. Just the image of them all creating beautiful music on stage together was enough to be revolutionary. It hadn't really been done before. But things would not remain revolutionary for long. Civil Rights leaders were jailed and assassinated. Soldiers came back haunted by a meaningless war. Charles Manson happened. Generational talents joined the 27 club. The climate became paranoid and fearful and the boots of Nixon and Reagan were on their way to decimate any hope that may have percolated over the last few decades... And the survivors of that movement were trying to reckon with it. Marvin Gaye wrote his masterpiece "What's Goin' On", which covered a wide range of topics from the perspective of someone coming back home to all of this. Sly in the meantime had become somewhat of a recluse, diving heavily into drugs and perhaps feeling despondent after everything that had happened. Upon hearing "What's Goin' On", Sly decides that the album they're working on will have a response title "There's a Riot Goin' On", with a Red, White, and Black cover to boot. Sly's album would be more from the perspective of someone that's been in the middle of the riots; someone with plenty to say about the state of the world, but plenty of psychological injuries to tend to as well (whether or copius amounts of cocaine and pcp is the best solution to that is up for debate). Whether you like them or never want to hear them again, The Eagles are still one of the biggest bands to ever hit the radio waves. Jumping in to the second wave of the "California Sound", they were able to make well rounded songs with superior study quality, which was reaching it's technical peaks around this time. When The Replacements went into the studio to make their 3rd album in 1983, they found themselves caught between their punk roots and their desire to grow and change as artists. They had become unsatisfied with the rules that punk unknowingly had put in place. It was becoming more and more of a scene with expected styles and sounds; and deviating from that too much risked the ire of the crowd (not that they minded that). The resulting album, Let It Be, is-fittingly-their coming of age album, channeling their frustration with the music scene into the frustration of a teen coming to terms with his changing body (boners and all). In 2011, John Dyer Baizley put to pen to paper and started working on lyrics for what would be Baroness' 3rd album, Yellow & Green, with drummer Allen Blickle and guitarist Pete Adams. The themes were of addiction and loss and what happens when you live beyond the traumas of your life and decide to keep on going. It's a redemption arc that starts with great loss, and it became oddly prophetic. Of the songs that were written, none were as prophetic as their lead single "Take My Bones Away". In it, he seems to be pleading with an otherworldly power to take away his bones. Then, during their promotional tour for the album tragedy struck, as their tour bus crashed and plummeted 40 feet. While there were no casualties, there were many injuries, including a broken arm and leg on John's left side, likely needing rods and screws to recover. Did an otherworldly entity hear his cry and deliver him a cosmic joke? Who knows... But this is one hell of an album. Today it's just me and Jon and we're finishing up this sprawling tale of an album. When we last left off, the DBT was giving us a full on education of the "southern thing" and we learned a lot, both the good and the bad. With Disc 2 they take a slightly different path into true rock and roll mythology. We learn about the growing pains of a band called Betamax Guillotine as they contend with the Lynryd Skynrd's legacy. Then we get a whole five songs detailing Skynryd's rise and fall!
