Mike Touesnard, 81, is a farmer from Centre, Nova Scotia, whose land carries wild blueberries, honey bees, and Christmas trees. Wild blueberries already grow on the thin, acidic barrens there, so the work is management rather than planting: a two-year cycle of bloom, fruit, and harvest, then mowing or burning the field so it can rest and set a heavier crop. At the height of his career he had about 30 people hand-raking the low plants before the berries softened. Bees are a natural fit with that crop — wild blueberries need insect cross-pollination to set fruit, and the same ground that carries the fields can carry the hives that do the work and leave with honey. At 81 Mike still manages blueberries, the bees and Christmas trees.
