#187: Is a Little Restriction Really That Bad?
In this episode, I’m responding to a post from a recovery content creator with over 100,000 followers who argued that maybe we’ve become a little too afraid of restriction — that perhaps we say “yes” to food too often, and that sometimes wanting more food but deciding you’ve had enough can be completely fine.
And I have… thoughts.
Because there is a HUGE difference between what might be neutral food decision-making for someone without an eating disorder and the kind of message you give to someone who is actively trying to recover from restriction.
When your audience is full of people whose eating disorder is already desperately looking for permission to eat less, move more, choose the “healthier” option, or convince themselves they’ve had enough… telling them that restriction isn’t necessarily a problem can be incredibly dangerous.
So in this episode, I’m unpacking the nuance that I think is missing from this conversation, why recovery advice needs to be recovery-specific, and why I will continue to be the person telling you that your eating disorder probably does NOT need another reason to say no to food.
If you’d like personal support from me, I have a few one-to-one coaching spots opening here and there throughout September and October.
And if you need support in between sessions — or one-to-one coaching isn’t accessible to you right now — you can try AIDanie® for free at www.aidanievankay.com.
I’ll see you back here next week. 🤍
