Send a textPaul Fidrych was the director of hardgoods product management for Burton during snowboarding’s golden era. Paul oversaw production of the Brushie trouts, Terje swords, and was a key player in the development of the Burton custom. And this year the Burton Custom turned 30 and the story behind its development highlights a commitment to progression, of materials, building techniques, art, and the culture of snowboarding. The custom was a catalyst for change and in no small way that change was driven by Paul’s engineering sensibility and his direct communication with some of the best snowboarders in the world at the time including people like Craig Kelly, Bryan Iguchi, Victoria Jealous, and Jason Brown. Paul was also a facilitator at Windell’s summer camp on Mount hood the year I went there 1991. Send a textPaul Culling was a pro snowboarder in the late 80's and early 90's scoring sponsorship contracts with Gnu, Nitro, and K2 before starting his own snowboard brand, Luxury Snowboards. He was also the first pro on Westbeach outerwear. Paul's entrepreneurial spirit found an outlet in snowboarding first through an innovation for boots, eventually in running the world's first adult snowboard camps on Mt. Seymour, and ultimately through flying around the world with a team of Luxury pros that included Mike Estes and Shin Campos. Eventually Paul joined the "internet" sector of the money market and innovated there. I met him in the early 2000's when he integrating commerce into the Boardroom's website. Send a textDon Szabo's passing last week sucked. He was a pillar of joyous excitement in the action sports world. Don started his career as professional skateboarder and fell in love with snowboarding in Southern California. His pro model on Nectar snowboards out of San Diego was one of the very first pro models in snowboarding. His pro model on Lamar (all 4 of them) were among the best selling boards of the era. Double O Szabo were skits in the Creatures of Habit series of movies and are hilarious. Don's sense of humour shone through his public persona. When his wife and mother died Don was there to hold their hands and care for them. In the ten years since his wife died he travelled and mountain biked and cared for his two daughters, mostly with a smile on his face. Send a textMurray Siple is a Snowboard Filmmaker from the golden era of snowboarding who was based out of Vancouver and went to Emily Carr art institute. His unique films stood out and started the careers of some of the other BC film crews like Treetop. In 1996 Murray was in a car accident that left him paralyzed. Over the last 33 years he's navigated his new life in a way that can only be described as awe inspiring. His film Carts Of Darkness showcased his continued growth as a film maker and his latest project is adaptive surfing.
