(18:30) Chris mentions a second study about the perception of overall quality of life. (20:00) Nurses, 385 of them, were followed for a year and then asked for their perception of quality of life. The study was a self-assessment, not following health markers. Exercise increased positive outcomes and “compassion satisfaction.” Vinnie laments the lack of real physical fitness challenges in schools. (23:00) He has been reducing his screentime by putting himself on a “phone diet.” (23:15) The average reported phone time for most people is just under 8 hours! Our current lifestyle has weakened over several generations. (7:00) Today’s lifestyle has phased out needs and behaviors that years ago were relied upon for strength and resiliency. (9:00) This has contributed to poor health and decreased longevity. Our bodies are supposed to be interconnected with nature and the environment (15:00). Vinnie gives an example of a recent climb he did where another climber was missing out on the beauty of the surroundings. The Industrial Revolution started much of the culture change. (23:00) Many inventions have helped improve life; however, many have changed how we challenge ourselves. Reintroducing some of the challenges can help us to achieve better health, both mentally and physically. (26:00) Dr. Sharon explains hormesis, which is a form of adaptation. (30:00) The leading cause of disability in this country is disuse. (37:50) There is a more recent specialty in medicine called “exercise oncology.” It has been shown that exercise can improve cancer outcomes. (38:00) Stress For Growth There are various types of stress; however, too much and too inadequate amounts of stress can both be harmful. (46:00) The goal is to find the optimal or “Goldilocks level” of stress. A mild or moderate amount should work. There’s no real need to go to extremes to make a difference. Vinnie mentions his desire to get back to a “fitness middle class.” (51:00) “Stress inoculation” is an idea (not an actual vaccine and not childhood adversity) that exposes kids to small amounts of stress to help childhood development. The American Heart Association is pushing back against this move. (21:00) The various reasons the AHA gives are discussed and not all of them make sense. Vinnie and Chris review the list of companies and how much they contribute to the AHA each year. (28:15) One excuse claims the number of products is “just too hard” to list. The UK is now banning ads for junk food. (35:45) They discuss the drug Jardiance and the health disclaimers at the end of the ad. (10:00) It’s very liberating to learn that eating is less about calories and more about hormones. When you understand that fat and protein are proper fuels for your body, you will be more satisfied and less white-knuckled. Hilary shares how she learned about low-carb, high-fat eating. (22:40) She also had a child with severe eczema that wouldn’t heal. She tried giving him raw dairy and his condition cleared up within months. They discuss raw dairy, what it is, and both the benefits and caution of consuming it. (29:00) Always do your research and know your farmer. (33:00) Culture Precedes Success Hilary is working on a pilot program for her school to get healthy, nutrient-dense foods into her school. (46:20) The program teaches parents the proper ratios of nutrition. There is a fundraising program so schools can get more cooking equipment to help schools provide nutritious food. They discuss veganism and how it affected people they know who tried it and how their health deteriorated. Food Expo West (10:00) Impossible, the vegan “meat” brand, is introducing “steak bites.” People have an impression that “plant-based” is healthier. Vinnie relays a story of getting inspired to get outside. (20:20) You can get outdoors or prepare a good meal with just a little planning and foresight. (31:00) They share some ideas and examples. There is a system of food classification called NOVA Classification. (38:00) It ranks the levels of different processed foods. They discuss what companies financially support this system and the apparent motivation behind the opposition to being classified; consequently, it’s an example of “prisoners running the asylum.” An 18-year-old is taking on Big Food in a lawsuit. (48:00) His claim emphasized how ultra-processed foods are marketed to kids similar to cigarette marketing in the 1960s and 1970s. He’s been diagnosed with NAFLD and type 2 diabetes at age 16. Multiple reputable doctors have spoken out against the AAP’s recommendations as many studies refute the AAP’s claims. The current "standard of care" can increase blood sugar in children.
