Why Your Environment Dictates Your Future Success | Ed Mylett

Self-discipline isn't something you're born with. It's something you can build until it runs on autopilot.  This weekend I pulled together some of my favorite conversations on the one trait that changes everything. I open with five rules I've carried with me for over twenty years. They're the mindsets behind Tiger Woods and some of the most dominant athletes who ever lived. I've read them thousands of times, and they've shaped how I think about work, pressure, and what it really means to win. Then I sit down with Mike O'Hearn, who started training at eight years old and is still getting better nearly four decades later. Mike tells me where his chip on the shoulder came from and what gets him out of bed at 3 a.m. Tim Grover, the man who trained Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, settles a debate I've always wondered about and explains why the greatest are never satisfied. Dean Graziosi went from a small blue-collar town to building one business after another. He pushes back hard on one of the most popular pieces of advice in entrepreneurship. Alan Stein Jr., who has spent years around elite NBA performers, shares research on visualization that blew my mind. I share what visualization did for my own baseball career. I close with something I feel deeply about: what conformity really costs you and why the lonely road is worth it. Here's what you'll gain from this episode: The Dominator Mindset: The five rules that separate the greats from everyone else, and why they're mindsets, not just behaviors. Decades of Dominance: What it takes to stay at your peak long after most people have quit. The Never Satisfied Standard: Why the true greats work harder after they win, not before. Go Deep Before You Go Wide: A take on building wealth every new entrepreneur needs to hear. Train Your Mind First: How visualization and the right kind of stress can raise your game. Color Outside the Lines: Why the life you want is waiting outside the picture you were handed. Sometimes all you can see in front of you is smoke. Don't look at the wall. Keep your eyes on where you're going and drive right through it. 👉 SUBSCRIBE TO ED'S YOUTUBE CHANNEL NOW 👈 → → → CONNECT WITH ED MYLETT ON SOCIAL MEDIA: ← ← ← ➡️ INSTAGRAM ➡️ FACEBOOK ➡️ LINKEDIN ➡️ X ➡️ WEBSITE Learn more about your ad choices. They come from your questions. Thousands of you sent questions in during Season 2 of John Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, so before we kick off Season 3, I sat down to answer them. No prep. Just my raw unfiltered answers. I go deep on how to sell a dream so big that everyone on your team can see their own dreams inside it. How to carry real confidence without losing your humility, and one of the toughest questions I've been asked in a long time: what do you do when you're leading from underneath someone who feels threatened by you? I open up about servant leadership, about letting go of the need for credit, and about why I stopped micromanaging a long time ago. Then Max, my son, asked me how to get ready for the leader's legacy, and that's where it got personal. Having my son sitting across from me while I talked about what really lasts made this one hit different. I think you'll feel it too. At the end of your life, you won't be sitting around with your trophies. You'll be sitting around with your people. That's the legacy, and that's why I want you to hear this one. You can't change yesterday's newspaper, so why are you still carrying it around?   I have wanted to sit down with this man for so long. Imagine going from living in your car to building two multibillion dollar brands. It doesn't even sound real when you say it out loud. But that's not what I admire most about him. It's how he carries the success: with humility, generosity and kindness. So today I got out of the way and let him teach.   I've interviewed some of the top entrepreneurs on the planet, and I don't know that I've ever met a better communicator. This conversation is a masterclass, and I'm fired up for you to hear it.   John Paul DeJoria is the co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems and Patrón Spirits Company. He started Paul Mitchell with $700 and lived in his car to make it happen. Then he built Patrón into a brand selling millions of cases a year.   Here's what you'll gain from this episode: The Two Rules of Success: two rules to live by if you want to see more success in every area of your life. You Can't Change Yesterday's Newspaper: Why he wouldn't change a single thing about the hard times, and how to move forward after hardship Watch Your Words: Why saying "I'll try" keeps you trying forever, and how to break the pattern. The Richest Man's Regret: What John Paul DeJoria said he would give up just to have been happy, and what that says about money. Kindness Works, Even for Jerks: How humor and kindness disarms, and why you should never knock your competitor.   Whatever you're still carrying from yesterday, consider this your permission to put it down. I don't want you to just listen to this one. I want you to feel it, then go live it. What if the success you’re chasing is actually keeping you from enjoying the life you’ve worked so hard to build? In this mashup, we’re going straight at something I think every ambitious person needs to hear: the danger of becoming addicted to achievement. I want you to win. I want you to build the business, make the money, transform your body, impact people, and chase every dream God put in your heart. But if your happiness is always waiting on the other side of the next goal, you can spend your entire life achieving and never actually feel fulfilled. The answer isn’t to stop chasing greatness. It’s learning how to fall in love with the PROCESS while you’re becoming great. Fallon Taylor opens up about what happened after she finally became a world champion and discovered that catching the dream didn’t magically fix everything. Her answer became growth and contribution, continuing to evolve while using what she learned to serve other people. Inky Johnson takes that idea even deeper with one of the most powerful definitions of courage I’ve heard: committing to the process when nobody can guarantee you the outcome. After his injury, he learned to stop needing the reward to justify the work and instead let his character, integrity, and commitment determine how he showed up. Matthew McConaughey breaks down the difference between happiness and JOY, and why constantly moving the finish line can rob you of both. He shares how some of the greatest results of his career came when he stopped obsessing over the result and became completely immersed in the work. Dean Graziosi reminds us that money and achievement without fulfillment aren’t enough, and that we need to work on ourselves just as hard as we work on our businesses and our bank accounts. Inky comes back with another lesson I love: be where your feet are. Take the pictures. Have the fun. Build the memories. Don’t become so good at accomplishing things that you forget to actually EXPERIENCE your own life. Then Rob Dyrdek gives you a masterclass on intentionally DESIGNING your life instead of simply cramming more into it. He breaks down how tracking his time, eliminating friction, creating systems, and constantly optimizing his schedule allowed him to accomplish more while protecting the parts of his life that bring him joy. Jesse Itzler brings it home with the courage to START before you’re ready. He built businesses in industries he knew almost nothing about because he trusted himself to get through the door and figure it out. His reminder is simple: you will never have enough experience, perfect timing, or every answer before you begin. And real success isn’t dominating one area of your life while everything else falls apart. It’s building winning habits across ALL the buckets that matter. Key Takeaways: Why achievement can become an addiction and quietly steal your happiness Fallon Taylor on finding fulfillment through growth and contribution after reaching the top Inky Johnson on choosing process over product and committing without a guarantee of success Matthew McConaughey on why joy is found in the doing, not at the finish line Dean Graziosi on building yourself while you build your success Why being present, having fun, and creating memories are part of a successful life Rob Dyrdek’s approach to designing, tracking, and optimizing your time around the life you actually want Jesse Itzler on starting before you’re ready and making yourself irreplaceable Why true success means winning across multiple areas of your life, not just money or career I want you to chase your dreams with everything you’ve got, but don’t miss your LIFE while you’re chasing them. Stop telling yourself, “When I get there, then I’ll be happy.” There will always be another mountain, another goal, another number, another finish line. The joy is in the ride. The fulfillment is in who you become and the people you impact along the way. Chase greatness, but make sure you’re actually alive enough to enjoy becoming great. When you downloaded the workbook, you sent in your leadership questions, and over 10 thousand of them came in! John Maxwell and I went through them, and we answered the themes that kept coming up again and again.   My son Max brought your questions to the table, and what came out of the conversation is real, unscripted, and personal. Here are some of the questions you sent in: What is the biggest problem with how people lead today? What is the biggest thing you had to unlearn to level up your leadership? How do you lead when nobody is listening? How does a wife support her husband in becoming a better leader? John has spent more than fifty years living what he teaches, and he has stood on a stage more than 14,000 times. He isn't polished about it. He tells you plainly about the seasons he led badly, and where he learned to look first when people stop listening.   I open up about the way I led in my twenties and the day I decided to talk less and ask more. I share the story of a ride home that changed how I see belief inside a marriage. I ask John a question I've never asked him, and his answer surprised even me.   The chemistry in this one is something you have to witness. We go back and forth like family around a kitchen table. Customers come and go. Fans will drive 40 hours just to be in the room with you.   I've wanted Jesse Cole on this show for a long time, and this conversation went further than I hoped. More than 4 million people are on a waitlist for a ticket to one of his games. He's drawn crowds bigger than the Super Bowl. And he's done it by obsessing over the thing I believe matters most as AI moves into every business: how people feel when they deal with you.   This was not an overnight success. Jesse's pro baseball dream ended with a torn shoulder. He spent ten years running a team almost nobody came to see. Then he and his wife, Emily, bet everything on a college summer team in Savannah, and in the first three months, they sold two tickets. What happened next became the Banana Ball Championship League and one of the great American business stories.   I asked him the question every entrepreneur in a hard season needs answered: why didn't you quit? I share what it felt like when my own baseball dream ended. I push back on founders who build companies just to sell them, and I explain why most big exits aren't what they look like. And I challenge Jesse on what separates great entrepreneurs: they keep improving even when everything is already working.   We finish with what Jesse and Emily are building off the field, and it may be the most powerful part of the whole conversation.   Here's what you'll gain from this episode: Fans vs. Customers: Why one is transactional and the other will defend you when you make a mistake. The Friction Question: The one question that sparked Banana Ball, and how it applies to a realtor, a dry cleaner, or any business. Attention Beats Marketing: Why Jesse hasn't spent a dollar on marketing since opening night, and what he does instead. The Energy List: How Jesse found what fuels him, and why it changed the way he shows up as a leader and a dad. Lessons from Walt Disney: Two principles Jesse built his company on, including the one that explains why he won't sell. Learn, Change, Plus: The nightly habit that keeps a sold-out business from ever getting comfortable.   Two tickets in three months. That's where this started. If I could only keep one skill out of everything I've built, this is the one. I get asked all the time what skill matters most for an entrepreneur, and my answer never changes: the ability to persuade. Without it, most of what I have doesn't exist. And here's the hard truth I open this episode with. Most people are nowhere near as persuasive as they believe they are, and that belief is the very thing keeping them stuck. So I brought together three of the most influential people I've ever sat across from. John Maxwell has trained leaders in every country on earth and sold more than 30 million books. Zoe Chance teaches one of the most popular courses at the Yale School of Management. Mauricio Umansky built The Agency into one of the biggest real estate brands on the planet, starting at the worst possible moment to start anything.I push each of them on the things most people never talk about. I get honest with John about a part of leadership where I've always felt limited. I admit to Zoe the surprisingly small thing I'm still afraid to ask for. And I press Mo on what really happened before The Agency existed, a story I was surprised he was willing to tell. I also lay out my own playbook: why energy moves people more than words, why you have to sell a dream big enough for everyone around you to fit inside, and a lesson my dad taught me as a kid that every closer needs to hear. Here's what you'll gain from this episode: The Question That Changes Everything: The one question Zoe teaches that opens doors you didn't know existed, and what happened when I asked it of myself. Your Sweet Spot: How John realized he was in the wrong role for years, and how to find where you win. The Emotional Moment: How Mo reads a room before a deal, and the one mistake that destroys the connection. Rejection as Training: Why you should be hearing no a lot more often, and how to make it hurt less. Scaling Your Influence: How to transfer the skill of persuasion to your team so it grows beyond you. Everything you want is on the other side of someone saying yes: your business, your family, your team, even the person in the mirror. Stop checking the box like you've already mastered this and go get better at it. 👉 SUBSCRIBE TO ED'S YOUTUBE CHANNEL NOW 👈 → → → CONNECT WITH ED MYLETT ON SOCIAL MEDIA: ← ← ← ➡️ INSTAGRAM ➡️ FACEBOOK ➡️ LINKEDIN ➡️ X ➡️ WEBSITE Learn more about your ad choices. Every leader eventually asks the same question: why isn't my team buying into this? I've asked it myself. And the answer almost never has anything to do with the vision. It has everything to do with whether people have already bought into you as the person carrying it. I bring up something John said to me earlier this year that has stuck with me, about how rare it actually is for anyone in a position of influence to stand up and own a mistake out loud. That conversation is one we don't have enough, and John and I go deep on why owning your failures builds more trust than pretending you don't have any. John breaks down the 8-step process to get your team to buy-in, step by step, from the first crack people notice in a problem all the way to the moment buy-in becomes automatic and you don't have to ask for it anymore. He walks it back to his own story: stepping into a role after a legendary 27-year predecessor and spending nearly two years proving himself before anyone came looking for his counsel instead of comparing him to the guy before him. Here's what you'll gain from this episode: Sell Yourself First: Why the vision is always the second sale, never the first. The 8-Step Buy-In Process: John's exact sequence for turning a skeptical team into one that believes your belief before you've finished the sentence. The Line I Can't Forget: What John said to me that reframed why owning your mistakes builds more trust than covering them. Two Years to Earn the Room: John's own story of following a beloved leader and what it actually took. This Week's Rep: One decision that builds credibility before you ask anyone to follow you anywhere. Buy-in isn't built in the big speech. It's built in the Tuesday nobody's watching, the mistake you own out loud, and the promise you keep when it would've been easier not to. Do that long enough and you stop needing to ask people to follow you. This wraps Season 2 of my series with John Maxwell on his 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. If you haven't already, click the link above to download the free 21-page workbook and track your reps for every law we cover. Alex Hormozi is back on the show, and I’m telling you right now, this may be my favorite conversation we’ve ever had together. I believe Alex is one of the best business minds in the world today, but what makes him different is his ability to take incredibly complex ideas and make them immediately actionable. We get into everything from productivity and AI to leadership, leverage, risk, and why some entrepreneurs explode through barriers while others stay trapped at the same level for years. One of the biggest ideas we unpack is something I believe every entrepreneur needs to hear: the risk that got you where you are may not be enough to get you where you want to go. Alex explains why so many entrepreneurs get trapped between $1 million and $3 million in revenue. You’ve finally made enough money to become comfortable, and now the very thing that helped you survive starts working against you. You become protective. You stop making the bets that got you there. But if you want another level, your capacity for risk has to expand alongside your capacity for opportunity. We also go deep on effort, focus, and leverage. Alex challenges the obsession with complicated morning routines and explains why your best cognitive hours should be protected for your most important work. He breaks down his philosophy that "work is the goal," why winning against other people eventually becomes too low of a standard, and why some of the most successful people measure themselves against what they were truly capable of giving. And his take on AI absolutely stopped me. Too many entrepreneurs are using AI to do the wrong things faster instead of asking whether those things should be done at all. Sometimes the greatest leverage isn’t doing something more efficiently. It’s eliminating it completely. But underneath all the business strategy is something even bigger. Alex talks about becoming a father, thinking differently about legacy, redefining what a great day actually looks like, and asking a deceptively simple question before taking a risk: What will this actually change about my day? We talk about why fear lives in the vague, why failure builds the pattern recognition that eventually makes success repeatable, and why great entrepreneurs eventually stop "building" businesses and start assembling them. If you’re an entrepreneur, leader, or someone who knows there’s another level in you, this episode will challenge the way you think about work, risk, success, and what you’re actually building your life for. Key Takeaways: • Why your risk tolerance has to increase as your success increases• The $1M to $3M "swamp" that keeps entrepreneurs stuck• Why "work is the goal" can completely change how you measure success• How to protect your highest cognitive hours and eliminate unnecessary routines• Why focus is subtraction and doing less can create more leverage• The biggest mistake entrepreneurs are making with AI right now• How failure creates pattern recognition and makes future success faster• Why great entrepreneurs eventually stop building businesses and start assembling them• How Alex evaluates risk by asking what it will actually change about his daily life This one is packed with ideas I’ll personally be thinking about for a long time. If you know an entrepreneur who feels stuck at the same level, send them this episode. It might show them exactly what’s been holding them back. MAX OUT. The people closest to you are quietly writing the next ten years of your life. When the water got shut off in my apartment, I did not just take inventory of myself. I took inventory of who was around me. What I found there redirected everything that came after it, and it is still the part of my story I talk about least. So this weekend I pulled together the conversations that hit this from every angle, and I put my own version of it up front.Jeff Foxworthy, Master P, Jamie Kern Lima, Trent Shelton, Fallon Taylor, and Tom McCarthy each arrive at this from a completely different life: comedy, hip hop, beauty, the NFL, rodeo, and peak performance. Not one of them got where they are alone, and not one of them got there by accident.  Here is a piece of what we get into: The question I ask about every person in my life, and why "they love me" is not the answer I am looking for Why Jeff Foxworthy says the mistakes that blow up a life never begin as big mistakes What Master P told his grandmother at seven years old, and the ten thousand dollars that showed up years later The story about my first grade teacher that Jamie Kern Lima pulled out of me, and why it still gets me Trent Shelton's soil test for your entire environment, and the palm tree that makes it impossible to unsee What Fallon Taylor says the turning point in a life actually looks like when it happens Tom McCarthy's poker table experiment in carrying an identity he had not earned yet The three words I use with people I love who are not good for where I am going Here is a piece of what we get into:I am not asking you to go clear people out of your life today. I am asking you to look around. Look at who you text when something good happens. Look at who gets the last hour of your night. Then be honest about what that is producing in you, because you will get your standards and not your goals, and those people are the ones setting them. 👉 SUBSCRIBE TO ED'S YOUTUBE CHANNEL NOW 👈 → → → CONNECT WITH ED MYLETT ON SOCIAL MEDIA: ← ← ← ➡️ INSTAGRAM ➡️ FACEBOOK ➡️ LINKEDIN ➡️ X ➡️ WEBSITE Learn more about your ad choices.
