Running out of breath on long runs of draw notes? It's a really common problem - and in this episode Scott and I work through it.

Scott went back to the Hoochie Coochie Blues and hit a passage with around 30 draw notes in it. He could manage it on his own, but once the backing track went on, his body went into panic mode and the air ran out. We start with the fundamentals - diaphragm breathing, standing up when you can and staying relaxed - and then look at why playing too hard wastes air.

From there I show him how to play at 80 per cent rather than 100, keep the airflow steady and slow a passage right down to find the gaps for breathing out. We also work on an exercise for breathing out quickly - holding a 2 draw for seven beats and emptying everything on the eighth - and I share a trick with a mic and an amp for stopping yourself playing too hard.

Most of the juicy notes in blues are draw notes, so breath management matters whatever your level. If you run out of air in long passages, this one is for you.
