Nathan is a Canadian teaching professional, a former professional golfer that played on the Canadien tour and oversees as well until a back injury lead him to coaching. He is the founder of the Tour Development Acadwmy. He was also the PGA of BC teacher of the year in 2022. Nathan has one of the most intersting side hustles as of late which I am super jealous about being a movie guy,  as he was hired as the official golf consultant for Apple TVs original series "Srick" starring Owen Wilson and Peter Dager. So you know we go into the behind the scenes of what  his role was on the show and you know that I had some pick an nits that I had to challenge him on but all in good fun. He is one of the best coaches in California ranked by Golf Digest. My guest on this episode is Nick Chertock. Nick is an accountant by trade and a 10 handicap golfer so you might be asking yourself, why is Guru having him on the show. I'm glad you asked because Nick has been instrumental in creating several golf instruction and biomechanics facebook groups over the years that have brought hundreds of coaches, biomechanics, trainers and fitness professionals together for debates and discussions. He is also one of the people that runs the biggest teaching summit in the country called "Open Forum" along with Michael Michelides and Chris Como. He is a superstar coach that is  on the Golf Digest best in state list and is on the Golf Magazine best young teachers and on the top 100 watch list. I have followed Johnathans career and have always been impressed by how many top coaches that he has spent time with and taken lessons from Butch Harmon, Jimmy Ballard, Chuck Cook and Randy Smith who coached him when he was trying to play and now mentors him in his coaching and there are many more as the list is long which I hugely admire. Johnathan started his career working for the Legend and my great friend, Jim Mclean. You can follow him on instagram @bettergolftucson where he has a massive following of more than 149 thousand. A little bit about Derek, he is the director of instruction at the Forty Niner Club in Tucson Arizona where he has been for the past 16 years. He teaches all parts of the game but has found his niche in the short game where he teaches a few tour players, such as Erik Van Rooyan, Michael Thorgbornsen and Matt Wallace and alot of really good college and amateurs as well. He is on the Ping advisory staff and did some really cool research on how the high launch, high spin shot is produced. When I saw that video a few years ago I was amazed at what Derek can do with a wedge which is what makes him so special as he is still a fine player himself. In this conversation we get into everything short game including his framework for assessing whether to use the ground or hit the ball first on your shots around the green to the different pieces that are necessary. We also discuss some of his work with a few of his players and some of the common mistakes that amateurs make around the greens. Finally we cover a few of his favorite drills and how to practice your short game and much more including some personal growth tips and how he stays sharp everyday. This is the first time that I have met Derek and I really enjoyed his caring personality and you can tell that he has intentional passion or golf and for people which is why he is one of the most sought after coaches in the game.
