According to reporting based on Tina Brown’s The Palace Papers, Jeffrey Epstein privately described Prince Andrew as “an idiot, but—to him—a useful one,” because Andrew’s royal status gave Epstein access and legitimacy that money alone could not easily buy. Brown wrote that Epstein traveled with Andrew to foreign markets where governments and business leaders were effectively obliged to receive a senior British royal, while Epstein accompanied him as an investment adviser. That arrangement allowed Epstein to use Andrew as a front man, gaining introductions to political leaders, wealthy businessmen and foreign officials while wrapping himself in the prestige of the British monarchy.
Biographer Andrew Lownie later made essentially the same argument, describing Andrew as a “useful idiot” who gave Epstein respectability, political access and business opportunities while being comparatively easy to manipulate. The relationship appears to have been transactional in both directions: Andrew gained entry into Epstein’s world of extreme wealth, private jets and powerful contacts, while Epstein gained something even more valuable, the credibility and doors opened by a member of the royal family. That is what made Andrew so useful to Epstein: not merely friendship, but the ability to convert royal proximity into access, influence and opportunity.
