    Sandy Ordille: Pioneer, Archivist, Inspiration

    1:44:07

In the annals of surfing history, Sandy Ordille is an extremely important figure. For not only did she participate in making it, but she has made it her life's work to document, preserve & highlight women surfers whose narratives have been long overlooked. Sandy has lived an incredibly impressive life as a pioneer and founding member of professional surfing. She was there at the inception of the IPS pro tour, where she traveled the world on a shoestring budget, competing and breaking new ground. In 2016, she was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame and then in 2017, The New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame. In another life, Sandy played in the all female band, Avant Garage in the late 80’s early 90’s when all female bands were the rarity. In short, Sandy is a revolutionary, a groundbreaker, and has most definitely led the charge for women’s equality both in and out of the water. Sandy is a native Ocean City, NJ and is our guest on this week’s episode of Swell Season Surf Radio.Swell season Surf Radio is recorded by the Newsstand Studio at Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by WAX.RadioMusic:Song: Wind 'an' SeaBand: Dakota Motor CoAlbum: Into The Son

The Many Lives of Pat Conlon

    1:17:28

Patrick Conlon is your quintessential New Yorker. He’s a smart talking, street walking surfer, artist, marketer, and former owner of the legendary Epstein’s Bar in the lower east side. He’s as OG Rockaway as they get. He grew up in the 80’s on a steady diet of surfing the Rocks and sneaking into punk shows. Pat’s lived many lives. He chased his surf passion and went to university at USC, started an industry surf zine, came back to NYC and worked as an editor at Spin during its heyday. He went on to be a marketing person for some of the major brands at their peak, such as, Quiksilver, Volcom, Vans, Supra & Kr3w apparel. He’s worked for incredible artists such as Tom Sach’s and is now producing his own iconic work. Pat is quick witted, charming, and charismatic. He’s always got a smart response with a twist of humor. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. So hold on because it’s a zig zagging ride that tells a story of one of Rockaways most beloved surfers. We hope you enjoy… Swell Season Surf Radio is recorded by the Newsstand Studio at Rockefeller Center, in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by WAX.RadioMusic: I Know You Got SoulArtist: Eric B & RakimAlbum: Paid In Full

    The Optimist: Greg Wachsteter

    1:22:20

Greg Wachsteter isn’t known for his fancy surfing or contributions to the surf industry. But… Greg is one of the most disciplined surfers I know. I have frequently woken up early for many dawn patrol sessions out in Montauk, only to see Greg paddling back as the sun is just rising over the horizon, already with an hour under his belt. His quote on his Instagram is “choose to be optimistic, it feels better “. Greg is a successful trader, one of the principles at Watermill Trading, a father, husband and no doubt brings his zeal into all aspects of his life. He also started Black Pool Coffee Roasters as a side project to do with his son. He bounces from NYC to Montauk weekly and never seems to be low on energy. He practices mindfulness and we get into some powerful conversation about mental health, living a purposeful life, and maintaining presence. He is our guest on this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio and this is a not to miss episode. Growing up, close to the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina, Riley always felt that her soul had been fed by water. A self taught photographer, over the past three years, Riley has spent almost every day documenting beach life, water birds, city scenes and her main focus, surf photography in Rockaway. Her work has recently appeared in the West Texas Literary Review and in The Kelp Journal. She is currently working on two photo projects and is writing a memoir, “Falling Waters.” Her first photo show is coming up on October 29th, at the “Avoid The Day” book store in Rockaway. She is probably best known among the NYC crew for her instagram handle: @LifeofrileyNYC. We really enjoyed having her on as a guest for this episode. She brings an incredible amount of experiences and enthusiasm that you can't help but feel throughout this interview. We hope you enjoy... Dylan Hronec: The Surfing Samurai

    1:33:01

Dylan Hronec is a 29 year old surfer from North Bellmore, New York. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Dylan has tackled many obstacles to get to where he is today. He has been surfing for almost 11 years. He developed a love for the water from a young age, but was always involved in other sports as surfing was not considered a possibility for him. That is, until Dylan went online one day and came across videos of Jesse Billauer, an accomplished quadriplegic surfer, and became instantly determined. Dylan’s family supported this dream of his and started looking up possible surf outings in the area. They found a couple of local non-profits and soon enough, Dylan was riding his first wave. He is now more commonly known as The Surfing Samurai and has gone on to surf in Kelly Slater’s Wave Pool, competed in the US Adaptive surfing Championships and is a brand ambassador for both the We The 15 campaign and the Local Non-profit, Surf For All. He’s appeared in numerous media outlets such as CBS, ESPN, Buzzfeed and more. We are super stoked to have him as our guest on this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio. Man In the Field: Jim Denevan

    1:25:53

Man in the Field: The Life and Art of Jim Denevan profiles Outstanding in the Field founder Jim Denevan, his trials of growing up in a turbulent family dynamic, and the artwork that came of it — both in his geometric land drawings and table-to-farm dinners through Outstanding in the field. Hosted at one long table, with 100 to 1000 guests dining together, Denevan has set tables in vineyards, beaches, meadows, fishing docks, and city streets. Over 120,000 lucky patrons in all 50 states and 16 countries have experienced this once-in-a-lifetime event. We are fortunate to be joined by the Film’s Director, our friend Patrick Trefz, Producer, Jesse Carfield, and the subject of the film, Artist Jim Denevan for this episode. Where were you? 9/11 Memorial Episode

    56:30

9/11 was twenty years ago. It’s hard for many of us to believe that, that much time has passed since that fateful day. On this episode we ask “Where were you?” It’s a question that gets asked a lot on the anniversary and we thought we would collect various recollections from that day. We first talk to firefighters, Christopher “Dorado” Gabby and Brian Walsh about that day and then we went to the 9/11 Memorial Paddle Out on Riverside Drive in Long Beach to document the gathering of our community to remember that day. we remember those we lost and those who sacrificed their lives. This day still stings for many of us and while time can help us move forward, the pain we all collectively experienced will never let us forget. Special Thanks Marvin Weiss, Skudin Surf & Surfrider LB for helping to coordinate the memorial paddle out and everyone who came to pay their respects. 49:55

A native from Melbourne, Australia, Davina Grincevicius relocated to New York City over 12 years ago and currently resides in Rockaway Beach. Her passion for surfing, shooting film and building community inspired her to launch Women’s Surf Film Festival over 8 years ago. In that time, the festival has grown and is now a week long celebration of films, panel discussions, art shows, and much much more… It inspires and encourages surfers from many different backgrounds and has had a positive ripple effect on the NY surf community. The Festival is from September 6 to the 12th, taking place in Rockaway Beach. I had an opportunity to sit down with Davina and talk about this years upcoming festival and why this is a not to miss event. The event is free and open to the public. Anyone can go. As if awesome movies weren’t enough, Swell Season will be hosting a live Q&A with NY Times Writer and recent guest Diane Cardwell on Thursday, September 9th at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. That should be a great conversation. Check the festival website for more information: www.womenssurffilmfestival.com We hope you enjoy our chat with Davina and hope to see you at the festival.
