5 Things We Won’t Be Doing After the Federal Budget Whenever a Federal Budget is handed down, the headlines start flying. New taxes. Superannuation changes. Property rules. Cost-of-living measures. Winners. Losers. And while it is important to understand changes that may affect your finances, I don't believe we should allow every new announcement to completely derail a well-thought-out financial plan. In this episode of SugarMamma's Fireplay, I'm flipping the conversation around and sharing five things Tom and I will NOT be doing in response to the Federal Budget — and why. In this episode, I share: 1. We won't stop working towards our goals We're not throwing our hands in the air and saying, "What's the point?" We'll continue working, growing our businesses, investing in our financial wellbeing and building towards the life we want. Governments and policies will change throughout our lifetime. Our responsibility for our own financial future remains. 2. We won't sit on excessive amounts of cash Having an emergency fund and accessible cash reserves is incredibly important. But beyond the cash we genuinely need, we don't plan on allowing fear to push us into unnecessarily sitting on the sidelines. We'll continue putting our money to work thoughtfully and in line with our long-term goals. 3. We won't overcapitalise on our home Your home can be an incredible asset — financially and emotionally. But that doesn't mean every spare dollar needs to disappear into renovations, upgrades and improvements. We still want to be disciplined about how much money we put into our home and make sure we're not sacrificing other important financial goals in the process. 4. We won't take on more debt than we can comfortably afford Debt can be useful when it is carefully considered and strategically managed. But taking on excessive debt — particularly expensive or non-deductible debt — can dramatically reduce your financial flexibility. We want our financial position to give us choices, not leave us trapped by repayments. 5. We won't panic about superannuation Superannuation rules will continue to evolve over the decades. That doesn't mean we're abandoning super or making dramatic decisions based on fear about what a future government may or may not do. Super remains an important part of our long-term retirement strategy, and we'll continue making decisions based on our own circumstances, professional advice and the rules that apply at the time. The bigger message This episode isn't about ignoring the Federal Budget. It's about responding rather than reacting. Understand the changes. Work out which ones genuinely affect you. Get professional advice where you need it. Adjust your strategy if necessary. But don't allow frightening headlines, political noise or speculation about what might happen next to push you into making financial decisions that don't serve your long-term goals. Because ultimately, governments will change. Rules will change. Markets will change.
