Some storytellers are for every season. O’Henry is one such. We grew up on his stories in English but also some of us will recall the wonderful televised adaptations of world’s best stories in the series, ‘Katha Sagar’. Made in 1986, the series featured a collection of stories by writers like Katherine Mansfield, Guy de Maupassant, Leo Tolstoy, O' Henry, and Anton Chekhov. Each episode was directed by one of eight well known Indian directors, including Shyam Benegal, Kundan Shah, Ved Rahi and Satyen Bose. Most of the stories in the series were one episode long. Today’s story is as much a remembrance of O’Henry as it is a hat tip to tasteful and meaningful entertainment that television used to be.
