Sermon: Devoted to the Gospel

Acts 4.1-31Have things ever become uncomfortable in your life because of Jesus? Maybe he’s moved powerfully so you that can’t stop talking about him even when others are annoyed. Maybe you’ve been threatened or warned and wondered what to do next. This Sunday, we’ll see the Holy Spirit bring about faithfulness in his disciples as they keep talking about Jesus even in the face of opposition.

Acts 3Living in a broken world with broken bodies brings about a deep desire for the power of God in our lives. Rightly, we want healing. We want a clear move of God. Yet, when healing comes, it’s easy for us to miss or mistake its source. This Sunday, as we work through Acts 3, we’ll see a man healed and the scripture call those who witnessed God’s power to repentance.

Acts 2:42-47 Christ ascended to his royal throne and sent his Holy Spirit on his church at Pentecost.After the Holy Spirit fell, in response to Peter’s sermon, 3,000 repented of their sins, trusted in Jesus and were baptized.Now what do they do?Acts 2:42-47 gives us a picture of the gospel habits the early church was devoted to—habits we, by the power of the Spirit, want to embrace as well.

Acts 2.37-41Have you heard the good news of Jesus, had your heart opened, and wondered, “What should I do?” If you have, you are not alone. That’s a question people have been asking since the first sermon an apostle preached about Jesus. Acts 2.1-36After much waiting for God to fulfill his promise to the disciples, the Holy Spirit arrives in Jerusalem with quite a stir. Amidst the confusion, it's fair to ask: What was happening there? What's the point? What is this about? But as we dig in this Sunday, we'll see the Holy Spirit's arrival is about Jesus being proclaimed and about Jesus being believed. The Spirit comes so that God's people could know ... and know for certain.

Acts 1.12-26This Sunday, we’ll see Jesus’ disciples together, united, and what the scriptures call of “one accord.” Yet, there was no overlooking what Judas had done in betraying Jesus at his arrest. There was no overlooking that left a gap in their leadership. But as the disciples pursued God in prayer, they found out that God was already at work and provided perfectly for his mission, even in betrayal.

Acts 1.1-11As we kick off our new sermon series through the book of Acts this Sunday, we’ll see the big mission God puts before his people: to witness to the end of the earth. But we’ll also see that there’s _even_ good news about this good news, because the disciples aren’t alone on the mission. Instead, God’s people are sent to carry out God’s plan under Christ’s authority by the power of the Holy Spirit.
