In my recovery I practiced mindfulness. Unfortunately it was not popular at the time I was seeing patients. I truly believe it would have been immeasurably helpful to them, some of them. The best description I’ve heard of it is that your thoughts are like a waterfall and the goal is to find a space behind the waterfall: We are not our thoughts. Of course this does remind me of Alicia’s assertion that Boda existed in ‘the shadow behind the mirror’. A kind of dark mindfulness. A malevolent consciousness that exists behind our perceptions of reality. There is more to this world then what is reflected back to us and I must now return to Ravenscourt.

In the first half of my life I accumulated many things. An education, money, a career, a partner, a place to call home, but in the last half of my life most of these things have slipped away. I know that some losses will always happen, however there are still things I refuse to accept; such as lies and the destruction of innocence. My colleagues say it’s unethical to share these sessions with you. But in my heart I know Alisha would want her story to be heard. She was so desperate for anyone to believe her. I didn’t at the time and now in a twist of fate, she’s the only person who can lend credence to this story...

Those who remember Ravenscourt can’t bare to speak its name, yet somehow they also can’t seem to forgive themselves enough to forget it... This is because I have received a letter from what I believe to be a delusional voice in the head of my former patient, Alicia. It refers to itself as ‘Boda’. The name of child would give to an imaginary friend or a pet. But I believe this creature walks on two legs. And is far more human than I once believed…

Perhaps you could be forgiven for thinking that the trees that surround Ravenscourt are there to hide its modesty. A privacy afforded to its vulnerable patients and selfless staff. However a darker reading could be that mother nature herself is trying to swallow this evil building from view. Trying to protect us; her naïve inhabitants. The same way a parent covers their child’s eyes when disturbing images appear on the television in front of them. But the horrors that lay in the Ravenscourt mental health facility aren’t secured behind a television screen. Instead they are only held back from our reality by a fragile layer of sanity, and a story which began with a young woman...
