Ep. 210 - Steely Dan Nerd Talk With A Side Of Chaos

Send us Fan MailWe chase the moments when music history turns on one decision, one voice, or one perfect solo. We debate The Tubes, Side Two classics, and “show stealer” performances while we also poke at streaming habits and an AI-generated greatest songs list that keeps changing. • our new OMOM Coffee sponsorship and how profits fund free veteran podcast training • Netflix DVD nostalgia and how streaming subscriptions shape discovery • The Tubes going from cult weirdness to MTV-era hits • record label pressure, band pride, and the cost of saying no • albums where Side Two outshines Side One, from Abbey Road to Dark Side of the Moon • “show stealer” moments like Mary Clayton on Gimme Shelter and the Baker Street sax • Clare Torry’s Great Gig In The Sky performance and why credit matters • Gemini AI top 20 “greatest songs” lists and what the changes reveal If you like this, share it, hit the subscribe button. Send us Fan MailWe pull over for an elderly woman lying in the grass beside a busy road and sit with the uncomfortable truth that most people kept driving. Then we shake it off the best way we know how, by talking music, arguing with AI-made lists, and spotlighting ways to support veterans through OMOM Coffee and our foundation work. • stopping to check on a stranger and calling 911 • realizing how few people take action in plain sight • sharing why OMOM Coffee funds veteran programming • talking through our veteran podcasting and storytelling classes • ranking AI picks for the best movie soundtracks • debating the best songs ever written for movies • running through iconic TV theme songs and what they trigger in memory • reacting to Gemini’s top 20 greatest songs list and calling out the misses • teasing upcoming plans for content, guests, and the Music Info Vault Go to omcoffee.com. Send us Fan MailWe bounce between the dark origins of famous songs and the very modern problem of paying premium prices for artists who may not be able to deliver the show you remember. Along the way we argue about Springsteen, tell on ourselves about nostalgia, and try to figure out what “live” even means anymore. • true crime cases that inspired popular songs and why the backstories change the listen • “Nebraska” and the push and pull of separating music from the musician • songs written from the offender’s point of view and why artists choose that angle • “Dancing In The Moonlight” as a victim’s response to violence and recovery • whether supergroups still work and when they feel like a money machine • summer tour packages, one hit lineups and who is still worth the ticket • backing tracks, lip syncing claims and how to sanity check with live video • legacy band names with no original members and why fans still show up • Paul Simon ticket prices, setlists and the value question for older legends If you like it, shed it. If you like this podcast SHARE it. Send us Fan MailWe go after music listicles that confuse genres, pad word counts, and still try to sound authoritative. Then we pivot from rock history and state-by-state band arguments to a movie list we actually like, plus a few recommendations worth your time. • calling out the “classic rock” label problem in 1983 song lists • giving Lionel Richie his respect while rejecting the category error • debating 1971 “high school hits” and what feels true now • unpacking why American Pie is brilliant and exhausting • reacting to Dark Side of the Moon “hidden truths” and the legends that won’t die • telling the Classic Albums Live story and why note-for-note matters • arguing the best band from every US state and where lists fall apart • running through “perfect movies” picks and what we’d actually watch • recommending Castle Rock for Stephen King crossover fans If you like it, share it go listen to the Vets Connection podcast if you're interested in veteran information and hearing veteran stories and stuff like that If you like this podcast SHARE it. Send us Fan MailI come back from the Philippines and shake off brutal jet lag before diving into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2026 results and the snubs that still make no sense. We argue about what “counts” as rock, why the Hall’s side categories feel like a loophole, and how New Wave legends like Talking Heads, The Cure, The Police, and The Cars hold up when you actually test the label. • trip highlights from the Philippines and the reality of a 12-hour time jump • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2026 nominees and the predictions we made • the final 2026 inductees and why some picks feel obvious • Mariah Carey’s absence and the case for uniqueness versus popularity • frustration with Early Influence and Musical Excellence categories and what they imply about the rules • 2025 versus 2026 class comparison and which year feels stronger • the Big Four of New Wave debate and why genre labels get slippery • why a familiar Cars song suddenly becomes an obsession If you like it, share it. If you like this podcast SHARE it. Send us Fan MailI chase the stories behind massive classic rock hits that almost didn’t happen, from “joke riffs” to last-minute album fillers. Then I pivot into how movies and TV lock songs into our brains and why 1980s films still set the standard for action, sci-fi, and cult classics. • Sweet Child O’ Mine starting as a warm-up riff • Don’t Stop Believin’ as slow-build cultural glue • Songs permanently linked to movie and TV scenes • Paranoid written fast to fill runtime • Under Pressure as chaotic improv that stuck • Metallica’s hesitation around personal lyrics • Dream On as a slow-burn power ballad • Jeff Lynne’s perfectionism and the “missing” feeling • Best 80s movies picks and hot takes • Blade Runner fandom and the power of soundtracks If you like it, share it. If you like this podcast SHARE it.
