Catastrophic haemorrhage means a lot of bleeding within a short span of time, an amount of bleeding that has to be stopped or at least stemmed before even the basic assessment and treatment of the patient can be done.
However important to realise that this could also be a slow trickle over an extended period of time. Something you regularly see across your screens at Israeli checkpoints up and down the Palestinian territories.
