Kouri Richins is a Utah mother of three and former real-estate agent who became nationally known after the March 2022 death of her husband, Eric Richins. Prosecutors alleged that she secretly gave Eric a lethal dose of fentanyl in a Moscow Mule at their Kamas, Utah, home, killing him for financial gain. The case attracted even more attention because Richins later published a children’s book about coping with grief after a parent’s death. Prosecutors also presented evidence that, weeks before Eric died, Richins had attempted to poison him by putting drugs in a sandwich, leaving him seriously ill but alive.

In March 2026, a jury convicted Richins on every charge she faced after roughly three weeks of testimony and only about three hours of deliberations. She was found guilty of aggravated murder for Eric’s death, attempted aggravated murder for the earlier poisoning attempt, two counts of insurance fraud and one count of forgery. Jurors specifically found that the murder was committed for financial gain and through the administration of a lethal substance. In May 2026, Richins was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, and a judge later rejected her request for a new trial.
