A Trivial Incident- An Earlybird Release Our narrator and his friend enter the woods on a large estate to hunt woodcock but are soon told that the owner does not allow hunting. The Gold- The Colonies had recently gone to war with the Old Country and New England coastal residents were hearing that british ships were raiding small towns. One married couple, having just received a large inheritance of gold, knew that it had to be hidden and quickly.... The Cat- A loner cat surviving by himself one winter in a mountain cabin, his mastrer having left for the winter, receives a visitor to the cabin in the form of an old man seeking shelter. The man is too weak to provide food, the cat appreciates the companionship, and a strong bond is formed. In part two our narrator, Joe, now older, heads out to the outback to raise sheep with his best friend who has just married a girl they had grown up with. Upon leaving she asks Joe not to let her new husband go near a drink- because he can't stop it once he gets starrted. Joe promises he won't. The reverend McLaghlin appears large in this story as well- bringing in the sheep.

Henry Lawson was one of Australia's greatest short story writers (I think the best) and poets, and hisn stories tell much about the people  who settle Australia and fought the tough climate and barren landscape to farm and raise livestock.  This story and the one that follows  (Pt. 2) provied accurate histrorical depictions of the men, women, and families that settled that land, and the strength of good preachers who gave the people hope and strength.  Check out our new website at www.bestof1001stories .com  and send us a kind review-thanks!
