Why Do We Give Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down?

The thumbs up and thumbs down gestures come from ancient Rome, especially from the gladiator games.

The audience or the emperor used thumbs to show their decision about the gladiator’s fate.

Thumbs up meant approval, victory, or mercy – the gladiator could live.

Thumbs down meant disapproval, defeat, or death – the gladiator would be killed.

However, some historians say the meanings might have been the opposite, but today the common use is thumbs up = good, thumbs down = bad.

Thumbs up is used to show agreement, success, or that something is good.

Thumbs down shows disagreement, failure, or dislike.

These gestures are popular worldwide and are often used without words.

On the internet and social media, thumbs up is used to like or agree with posts or comments.
