MDS Episode #0147 | Nick Gebhardt - The Art of Observation

Send us Fan MailWhat separates looking from actually seeing? In this episode of the Modern Day Sniper Podcast, Caylen and Nick explore the relationship between human perception, self-awareness, and performance. Starting with a discussion of Carl Jung's depth psychology, archetypes, the shadow, and self-image, they examine how unconscious behaviors and internal dialogue influence the way we approach challenges, process mistakes, and develop proficiency. The conversation connects these concepts to the mental demands of precision rifle shooting, where awareness, confidence, and the ability to recognize unproductive thought patterns can be just as important as technical skill. The discussion shifts into visual perception and the art of becoming a trained observer. Nick shares his exploration of Quiet Eye training, peripheral awareness, and exercises designed to improve his ability to recognize subtle visual information through a rifle scope. Drawing on his Marine Corps sniper and reconnaissance experience, Caylen explains the nine elements of human visual perception, establishing a visual baseline, recognizing target indicators, and developing observation skills that apply equally to hunting, surveillance, and competitive shooting. Along the way, they share hunting stories, practical observation drills, and techniques for identifying targets hidden in complex terrain. The episode concludes with a look at Nick's preparation for the PRS Finale, including positional shooting, natural point of aim, wobble zone management, dry fire, and building precision under increasingly demanding time constraints.MODERN DAY SNIPER⚡ NEW! Send us Fan MailNicholas is back to break down Jesse’s trip to the IPRF World Championship and what happens when preparation, pressure, difficult conditions, and high expectations all collide. With only a short window to learn a new Falcor factory rifle before competing against some of the best shooters in the world, Jesse finished 12th in the Factory Division at just 17 years old. Caylen and Nick unpack the challenging fishtailing winds, the mental pressure of chasing a podium, and how a couple of difficult stages became an opportunity to talk about something much bigger than match performance: learning how to process failure, manage expectations, and separate the result from your identity. The conversation then turns toward mindset, self-talk, presence, and the importance of having repeatable processes when performance matters. Nick puts himself under the bus with a costly mistake at the KRG Windbreaker—leaving two-tenths of wind dialed on his scope and spending two stages trying to diagnose everything except the actual problem. It becomes a perfect example of how quickly distraction can break a process and why consistent pre- and post-stage routines matter. From reading difficult wind and mirage to radical acceptance, coaching young shooters, and learning from mistakes without beating yourself up over them, this episode is ultimately about turning every performance—good or bad—into useful data for the next one.ScopeChaps⚡️ Website: https://www.scopechaps.com/Modern Day Sniper⚡️ NEW! Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Caylen sits down with Ryan Bucciantini for a conversation that goes well beyond marksmanship. Ryan brings more than 17 years of coaching experience and a 14-year tenure as a Firearms Instructor with the U.S. Coast Guard, giving him a unique perspective at the intersection of human performance, tactical readiness, and outdoor adventure. His philosophy is simple: fitness should support the cool shit you want to do outside the gym. Training isn't just about PRs and podiums—it should prepare you for the adventure life brings. That philosophy sets the stage for a deeper conversation about what it actually means to be capable. Caylen and Ryan dig into mindset, skill acquisition, nervous system regulation, stress inoculation, failure, ego, technology dependence, analog backup skills, and the difference between collecting information and actually learning how to apply it. They explore why principles and foundational skills matter more than the latest methods or equipment, and why becoming a better rifleman ultimately requires developing the human behind the rifle. This is about building the physical capacity, mental resilience, adaptability, and practical skills to perform when conditions aren't controlled. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Caylen sits down with Nick to talk about Jesse’s preparation for the IPRF World Championship, the scramble to get him behind a factory-class rifle, and what it really takes to prepare a shooter to perform under pressure. The conversation quickly moves beyond equipment and into the process behind performance: building confidence in a rifle, establishing a repeatable shot sequence, balancing precision with speed, and learning how to stay present when the clock and competition start applying pressure. From there, Caylen and Nick dig deep into the difference between simply practicing and actually training. They discuss natural point of aim, target-focused shooting, acceptable wobble zones, neural pathways, self-image, moving targets, and why fundamentals have to become automatic before a shooter can devote attention to conditions and decision-making. They also explore the value of traditional marksmanship skills—from sling-supported positions to smallbore shooting—and why developing a well-rounded rifleman requires more than learning the latest competition techniques. This episode is a deep dive into the mental and physical process of becoming a more consistent, capable precision shooter.Nick Gebhardt / ScopeChaps⚡ ScopeChaps & CanChaps: https://www.scopechaps.com/Modern Day Sniper⚡ Website: https://www.moderndaysniper.com/⚡ Training & Events (Register Here): https://www.moderndaysniper.com/events⚡ Modern Day Rifleman (Online Training): https://www.moderndayrifleman.com/spaces/16202640/page⚡️ NEW! Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Caylen sits back down with Frank Green of Bartlein Barrels for the second installment of their barrel series — and this one gets deep into the details that actually matter when you sit down to load ammo. Frank kicks things off by sharing real hard data from his 765 PRC pressure testing project with Hornady and Sierra — including what ten-shot groups loaded with standard off-the-shelf dies actually looked like — and why the difference between those groups and what a $400 custom die set produces might be smaller than you think. They dig into reloading die selection, shoulder bump, neck tension, small base versus full-length sizing, and what the data actually says about brand loyalty when it comes to brass. The conversation then moves into chamber anatomy — throat diameter, forcing cone angles, freebore, and what "match chamber" actually means (and doesn't mean) when you're ordering a barrel. Frank brings out a 50-cal cutaway and the barrel that went over 14,000 rounds still shooting half-minute to illustrate what carbon actually looks like inside a bore — and why borescopes have made his life harder, not easier. He and Caylen also unpack twist rate selection for heavier 6mm projectiles, why velocity plays a role in bullet stability at the margins, and why some bullet designs have simply pushed a caliber past its limits — and no twist rate fix will solve a bad design. This series is only getting better, and the next one is already in the chamber.🔗 Frank Green / Bartlein Barrels ⚡️ Website: https://www.bartleinbarrels.com/ ⚡️ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bartleinbarrelsinc/Modern Day Sniper ⚡ Website: https://www.moderndaysniper.com/ ⚡ Training & Events (Register Here): https://www.moderndaysniper.com/events ⚡ Modern Day Rifleman (Online Training): https://www.moderndayrifleman.com/spaces/16202640/pageFollow Us ⚡ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/moderndaysniper/ ⚡ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MODERNDAYSNIPER ⚡ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moderndaysniper ⚡ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/modern-day-sniper

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Caylen sits down with co-host Nick Gebhardt for the second installment of their ongoing series on the inner game of precision rifle competition. The conversation kicks off with real-world load development — Nick walks through how fast he got Jesse's new Falcor 6.5 Creedmoor dialed using half-grain charge weight increments and seating depth evaluation — before going deeper into self-awareness, radical acceptance, and the ego, persona, and shadow framework that's becoming the backbone of these conversations. Caylen and Nick explore whether human beings can actually change, what it takes to want it badly enough, and why real desire is the only thing that drives lasting transformation. The episode gets raw and personal from there. Nick shares a defining Army story about getting caught in a lie, the gut-punch of being told "we have an integrity problem," and what it cost him — and taught him — to earn that trust back. Caylen opens up about showing up to an international hunt with an expired passport, getting turned away at the border, and what sitting alone in a terminal for 12 hours after calling his wife taught him about moving too fast and owning your mistakes. They bring it all back to the range — pre-stage mental rehearsal, how to stop overthinking the physical and let training drive, and why shooting your own style beats chasing someone else's version of perfect. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Caylen Wojcik and Nick Gebhardt — PRS Tac national champion, Black Hawk pilot, and founder of ScopeChaps — kick off a new mini-series built around an honest, unscripted conversation about what precision rifle competition reveals about who we are as people. They lay out the premise: both are deep in the mix as competitors and business owners, both are chasing high-level goals — including Caylen's ambition to one day represent the U.S. on the World's team — and both know how hard it is to carve out intentional precision rifle training time while running a company and living a full life. They recap Nick's recent trip to the Short Action Customs Sizzler in Indiana, unpack the first-stage jitter that never fully goes away no matter how seasoned you are, and discuss why approaching that first shot with curiosity rather than pressure is the mindset shift that changes everything. The conversation goes deeper from there — into ego, persona, and shadow, the three versions of self that every competitor quietly juggles, and why the performance breakthroughs people chase on the range are inseparable from the inner work happening off it. Caylen and Nick discuss staying present under pressure, letting anger pass naturally instead of ruminating on bad stages, and what it actually means to compete for self-fulfillment versus external validation. This is the first episode of an ongoing live series — future installments will be scheduled in advance and streamed live. If you're not already inside the Modern Day Rifleman network, now's the time. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Caylen Wojcik sits down with Dr. David Bach — Harvard-trained physician and neuroscientist, serial entrepreneur, and founder and CEO of Optios, a neuro-technology company built on over $350M in DARPA-funded research into elite human performance. Dr. Bach breaks down the neuroscience of what's actually happening in the brains of expert marksmen versus novices — why the expert's execution is almost entirely automatic, why the novice's head is full of noise, and what that means for how shooters should think about training, flinch response, and the conscious versus unconscious mind. He unpacks neuroplasticity, the flow state, and why trusting your training rather than consciously managing your shot process is the scientific — not philosophical — path to peak performance.Caylen and Dr. Bach dig into the pre-shot routine, "quiet eye," wobble management, and how the proprioceptive system works in your favor when you stop chasing the reticle. They explore the neuroscience behind visualization — why Lanny Basham mentally winning the Olympics 100,000 times wasn't mysticism but measurable brain training — and what deliberate practice actually means versus just putting rounds downrange. The conversation closes on the role of pre-shot timing consistency, why incorporating a stage timer will make you worse before it makes you better, and why that discomfort is exactly the point. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Caylen Wojcik sits down with Frank Green of Bartlein Barrels—one of the premier precision barrel manufacturers in the country and a lifelong shooter with roots in high power rifle competition dating back to the late 1980s. Frank traces his path from competitive shooting and gunsmithing to co-founding Bartlein Barrels in 2004, where the team brought single-point cut rifling into the modern era with CNC-controlled precision. This is the first installment of a multi-episode series, and Frank breaks down the fundamentals every shooter should understand about how barrels are made—covering cut rifling, button rifling, hammer forging, and broach cutting—and why no shortcut in barrel manufacturing goes unpunished.Caylen and Frank dig into the details that matter most for long-range precision: residual stress in barrel blanks, what to look for as your barrel ages, the truth about cold bore shots, and how heat, mirage, and optical illusions can shift your point of impact by several minutes of angle without you ever touching the gun. Frank also walks through his personal cleaning protocol—what products to use, what to avoid, and why using a brush with abrasive compounds is one of the fastest ways to ruin an otherwise excellent barrel. Members of the MDS Club can also catch Frank in the exclusive Fireside Chat episode, where he takes direct questions from the community.🔗 Frank Green / Bartlein Barrels ⚡️ Website: https://www.bartleinbarrels.com/ ⚡️ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bartleinbarrelsinc/Modern Day Sniper ⚡ Website: https://www.moderndaysniper.com/ ⚡ Training & Events (Register Here): https://www.moderndaysniper.com/events ⚡ Modern Day Rifleman (Online Training): https://www.moderndayrifleman.com/spaces/16202640/pageFollow Us ⚡ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/moderndaysniper/ ⚡ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MODERNDAYSNIPER ⚡ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moderndaysniper ⚡ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/modern-day-sniper
