Matthew Barnwell III grew up in Harlem, NY during the 70's and 80's which was an interesting time in NYC. It was filled with crime and drugs and at the same time, lots of love and neighborhood community. He survived the streets of NYC and made it to The University of Connecticut where he developed into the man he is today. He has written his first book called, "Black Behind the Shield: A Collection of Stories the World Needs to Hear". With amazing honesty, retired Connecticut State Trooper Matthew Barnwell III brings you deep inside one of the most highly visible yet highly controversial professions in American life - that of law enforcement, in his gripping memoir Black Behind the Shield. Reading at times like a thriller, Black Behind the Shield takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster as Barnwell navigates through his personal and professional experiences with racism. As a Black man, Barnwell was seen and often treated like a suspect himself - in and out of uniform - by criminal suspects and by policing partners alike. At one point, he recounts the night he nearly lost his own life at point blank range, at the hands of a white officer from his own division. Black Behind the Shield is a fascinating and, at times, haunting journey through one man’s experiences – good and bad – while he put his life on the line daily trying to protect and serve some of the very people who viewed him as a second - class citizen because of the color of his skin.#CallerAreYouWithMe #MatthewBarnwell111 #BlackBehindTheShield #SixDegreesOfMiles #RighteousMusicMedia
