What should have been an easy blockbuster hit has turned into one of the saddest box office cases of 2023. "The Color Purple" made $18.1 Million on its Christmas Day opening, but it's projected to lose between $80 million and $100 million, and to make matters worse the industry isn't taking the "Oscar bait." What happened? Why did a movie with a seal of approval from Stephen Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey tank so quickly? I don't know if it's because it's an international film and we (Americans) are considered a foreign market or if Japanese studios think Americans won't enjoy it, but the noise surrounding this movie is too quiet and it's not getting the marketing it deserves. It's excellent! The more I think about it, the angrier I get. If the point was to commemorate and celebrate 100 years of Disney, I expected better. The plot is weak, the protagonist is unlikeable and the sidekick goat is obnoxious.
