When was the last time you walked away from a conversation with a potential client and later wondered if you missed an opportunity?   Maybe they never asked about working together. Maybe they didn't request a proposal. So you assumed they weren't ready to buy.   Yet consider this: What if the buying signal you were waiting for was one you could have created?   The most successful consultants and business owners don't just recognize buying signals. They create the conditions for buying signals to happen.   In this episode of the Sales Maven Show, Nikki Rausch shares four practical ways to create buying signals through curiosity, expertise questions, expanding the ask, and warm introductions.   You learn how to create more opportunities for meaningful sales conversations, recognize when a prospect expresses interest, and respond with a clear invitation that moves the conversation forward without pressure or pushiness.   The Transformation   Before listening, you may find yourself:   Waiting for prospects to request a proposal or ask about working together.   Spending too much time explaining your expertise instead of creating curiosity.   Recognizing interest but feeling unsure how to turn it into a next step.   After listening, you learn how to:   Intentionally create opportunities for prospective clients to express interest.   Use questions and introductions to open more valuable sales conversations.   Respond to buying signals with confident, specific invitations.   Key Takeaways   In this episode, Nikki shares:   Why buying signals aren't something you have to wait around to receive.   How creating curiosity opens doors that might otherwise remain closed.   Why expertise questions are often more effective than explaining everything you know.   How expanding a prospect's initial request can reveal a bigger opportunity. Why warm introductions create buying signals through established trust.   How to respond to buying signals without relying on vague "let me know" statements.   Why a question about your best price may be a valuable buying signal rather than a reason to discount.   Featured Framework: Four Ways to Create Buying Signals   A buying signal is a verbal or nonverbal cue that indicates someone's interest.   Recognizing these signals matters. But Nikki challenges you to go further by creating opportunities for them to happen.   1. Create Curiosity   Creating Curiosity is the second step of Nikki's signature Selling Staircase framework, and it's one of the most frequently missed opportunities in sales conversations.   When someone asks how you've been or what you've been working on, don't automatically give a throwaway response.   Share something relevant that may pique their interest and open the door to a conversation.   Nikki shares an example of a salesperson who mentioned a recent project in an email. The prospect immediately asked for more information about how this work might apply to their organization.   The opportunity didn't appear by accident. The salesperson created curiosity.   2. Ask Expertise Questions   Instead of spending your consultation explaining everything that qualifies you, consider how a well-crafted question communicates what matters.   For example:   "How important is it to you when hiring a sales coach that they have a successful career doing the work they're teaching?"   This invites the prospect to consider an important buying criterion without requiring you to launch into a lengthy explanation of your credentials.   Expertise questions plant seeds, demonstrate your understanding, and create opportunities for prospective clients to ask for more information.   3. Expand on the Ask   When a prospect asks for a price or a quote, you can answer their question while also exploring what they're trying to accomplish.   Nikki offers this question:   "Before I put a quote together, what are you really working towards this year?"   The answer may reveal needs and opportunities beyond the original request.   Rather than treating every inquiry as a transaction, you create space to understand the bigger picture and recommend a more valuable solution.   4. Ask for Warm Introductions   One of the strongest ways to create a buying signal is also one of the most overlooked: asking someone to make an introduction on your behalf.   When a satisfied client introduces you to someone in their network, you benefit from the trust and credibility they've already established.   Consider asking:   "Who else do you know that would benefit from this type of solution in their business?"   Then follow with:   "Would you be willing to make an introduction on my behalf?"   Nikki shares how one client's request for an introduction led to a national program rollout and a multi-six-figure opportunity.   What to Do When You Receive a Buying Signal   Creating a buying signal is only the beginning. The next step is making a clear invitation.   Instead of saying, "Let me know if you'd like a quote," ask:   "Would you like a quote on this?"   Instead of saying, "Let me know if you want to discuss it further," ask:   "Would you like to schedule a time to talk about this?"   These questions make it easier for a prospect to take the next step.   And when someone asks, "Is this your best price?" remember that this may be a buying signal.   You don't automatically need to discount. You can confidently hold your price, or explore a conditional close that makes sense for both parties.   The key distinction is that you decide which opportunities are a good fit and how you want to respond.   A Quote Worth Remembering   "The best opportunities truly are the ones that you create, not the ones that you're just waiting around to catch."   Try This This Week   Think about one upcoming sales conversation, networking event, or client interaction.   Choose one of the four strategies:   Create curiosity.   Ask an expertise question.   Expand on the ask.   Request a warm introduction.   Then pay attention to what happens.   When someone expresses interest, make a clear invitation instead of waiting for them to take the next step.   Who This Episode Is For   This episode is especially valuable when you:   Have plenty of conversations but want more of them to become sales opportunities.   Work with corporate or B2B buyers who frequently ask for quotes.   Want to communicate your expertise without overexplaining or performing.   Rely on referrals but rarely ask for introductions.   Recognize buying signals yet hesitate to make a direct invitation.   Keep the Conversation Going   Which of these four strategies are you ready to put into practice, and what opportunity comes to mind?   Explore the Sales Maven Society: https://yoursalesmaven.com/sales-maven-society/   Inside the Sales Maven Society, you find training, live coaching, and opportunities to practice creating curiosity, asking stronger questions, and responding confidently to buying signals.   Explore private coaching with Nikki: https://yoursalesmaven.com   Listen to more episodes of the Sales Maven Show: https://yoursalesmaven.com/sales-maven-podcast/   Timestamps   These chapter markers are approximate, estimated from the transcript and recording length, and should be checked against the final audio before publishing.   00:00 Why successful consultants create buying signals instead of waiting for them   -02:10 What a buying signal is and why waiting limits opportunities   -04:30 Strategy 1: Create curiosity   -07:25 Strategy 2: Ask expertise questions   -10:35 Strategy 3: Expand on the ask   -12:35 Strategy 4: Request warm introductions   -15:40 Recognizing buying signals and choosing which opportunities to pursue   -17:10 Why "let me know" isn't a clear invitation   -19:40 How to respond when someone asks, "Is this your best price?"   -22:00 Your challenge: Create one buying signal this week   -23:15 Building your skills inside the Sales Maven Society   About Nikki Rausch   Nikki Rausch guides consultants and service-based women entrepreneurs to close more of the sales conversations they're already having through natural, relationship-based strategies that feel calm, clear, and confident.   Whether you're still learning how to sell without feeling pushy or you're an experienced consultant ready to improve conversion, refine your messaging, and enroll more of the right clients, Nikki shows you how to strengthen each stage of the sales conversation.   Through private coaching, practical frameworks, and proven communication strategies, you learn how to explain your value, guide buyers toward a decision, and create more consistent revenue without pressure, fake tactics, or sacrificing your integrity.   Nikki's approach is designed for women who want sales that feel natural and results that feel inevitable.
