Ep. 2 Celebration & Memory with William Yang

Dylan Mooney, a Yuwi man from Mackay, Queensland, Torres Strait Islander from Darnley Island and Australian born South Sea Islander is the youngest artist represented in QUEER: Stories from the NGV Collection. In this episode, Courtney Act and Dylan Mooney discuss the artists digital artworks which depict queer and Blak urban love stories. Courtney also chats to Myles Russell-Cook, Senior Curator of Indigenous Art, NGV about artworks that explore the theme of love in the QUEER exhibition.

Mexican artist Frieda Toranzo Jaeger discusses her work from the NGV Collection 'autofelatio' (2018), which explores automotive ‘mythology’, colonialism, and sensuality. Also in this episode, Pip Wallis, Curator of Contemporary Art, NGV discusses queer strategies and how these techniques are represented in works throughout the exhibition 'QUEER: Stories from the NGV Collection.'

Pioneering Australian fashion designer Linda Jackson AO talks about her practice, collaborations with fellow artists and designers, and her work 'Black and White Calligraphy' (1978) on display in 'QUEER: Stories from the NGV Collection'. Also in this episode, Dr Angela Hesson, Curator of Australian Painting, Sculpture and Decorative Arts to 1980, NGV, discusses Queer Sensibilities, what this means, and how these ideas are represented in the works on show in the exhibition.

Courtney talks with photographer, writer, and performer William Yang, whose body of documentary and portraiture photography work since 1970 has engaged with the Sydney gay scene, the impact of HIV/ AIDS and his sense of identity as a Chinese-Australian. Yang discusses his two works in QUEER titled William in Scholar's Costume, from the Old New Borrowed Blue series (2008) and Battling Time (2010). Courtney also chats with Dr Ted Gott, Senior Curator of International Art, NGV about queer royalty and representations of celebration and memory throughout the exhibition.

Courtney chats with New York-based activist, filmmaker, and writer Tourmaline about her work which highlights the capacity of Black, queer, and trans people to make and transform worlds. Tourmaline’s films create portraits of people whose stories tell the history of New York City, including gay and trans liberation activists, drag queens, and queer icons Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Also in this episode, Courtney talks to Meg Slater, Assistant Curator of International Exhibition Projects, NGV about the themes of community and activism and how they are represented in NGV’s exhibition QUEER: Stories from the NGV Collection.
