For this episode, David is joined by Alex Abraham, the author of Trauma and Ecstasy. He is on a mission to share what he's learned about how psychedelics can help with overcoming trauma. As a child, Alex was sexually assaulted by an authority figure which traumatised him and led to physical illness. Alex explains how psychedelics, used in a therapeutic setting, opened the door to the feelings and emotions he had been suppressing. In this episode, which is the 36th in David´s CALM leadership series he talks about candour - radical candour and why as a leader it is essential. David starts by asking you to work out the consequences of not being completely honest at home, at work, with your colleagues, family, and friends.  He explains why ducking the issue because you are afraid to be candid, to be 100% honest, is rarely a good idea. Then, teaches you how to say what you mean and be honest without being nasty. KEY TAKEAWAYS Understand what the consequences of your choosing not to say what you mean are. Your body language shows people you are being dishonest, and they won´t trust you. You only have to lie to someone once for them to not trust you moving forward. He shares the 11 principles you need to follow if you are going to tap into this style of leadership. This is the 34th episode of David Roberts´ CALM leadership series. For this one, he continues to look at how leaders can build strong, long-lasting relationships that provide benefits for both parties.  To do this he builds on the 4-step process he shared in his previous CALM episode. Using the example of a coaching relationship he provides practical advice any leader can use to build strong connections with others. Relationships that have context, are mutually beneficial, lead to action and good outcomes. KEY TAKEAWAYS Building rapport takes time.  Build on that rapport by using good body language. The connection part of the conversation should not take more than 20% of the time you spend with someone. If it is taking longer, you need to tweak your approach. Today, David is joined by Jeffrey Rissman who is the Senior Director of Industry at Energy Innovation, an independent climate policy think tank. Jeff´s work has been featured in Fast Company and New Scientist. He helps the industry to navigate its way to a net zero economy. Jeff shares examples of how companies are transitioning to clean power and production methods. As well as explaining how the right policies and s are speeding up the process. KEY TAKEAWAYS The technology we need to transition to a clean economy exists and, in most cases, also makes economic sense. New legislation is speeding up the rate at which companies adopt clean production methods. Industrial heat pumps easily generate enough heat to carry out about a third of industrial processes e.g. cooking and packaging food. To be kind to the environment, it's important to find the most efficient and direct way to get the energy we need. A transition to a sustainable economy isn't a conservative or a liberal issue. In this, the 32nd episode of David´s CALM Leadership series, he continues with last week´s building strong work relationships theme. This time, he is explaining how to hire, hone and retain the right team. He includes tips to help you get the balance right so that you can treat your team members well without undermining your position as their leader. He starts by reminding us of why we need a team so much. Then, he provides you with a simple method to identify what you need and find the right people to get things done.
