UCF fans were still chanting “F the Mormons” while a BYU player was down on the field. Watch this one. College football trash talk is nothing new, but this crossed into straight religious targeting. During UCF’s upset of No. 2 BYU, the student section kept up the anti-Mormon chants even after multiple PA warnings and even while a Cougars player was being checked on the turf. Some fans were removed. Days later the Big 12 issued a $100,000 fine and rolled out a new policy: first confirmed incident gets the fine and a warning; a second one in the same game can trigger an actual on-field penalty. This isn’t the first time BYU has heard it on the road — Colorado State, Cincinnati, and others have been fined or forced to apologize for the same kind of stuff. The pattern is the point. A campaign official for Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed just admitted on hidden camera that El-Sayed receives illegal overseas donations. James O’Keefe’s undercover video shows regional field organizer Abdoul Beckwith saying, “You know, he has people from overseas that donate to him,” then confirming, “No it is not allowed.” He describes the pass-through: Overseas money goes to a family member, who then gives it to the campaign, adding “Everybody does it!” This is the exact foreign-national contribution ban under 52 U.S.C. § 30121. A 16-year-old walked into Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, just after 1 p.m. Thursday and murdered three children — ages 5, 8, and 11 — and a teacher. Another child and a teacher were left in critical condition. He forced entry by shooting at the locked doors with his mother’s shotgun. Then a student’s dad who saw him go in pursued him inside and ended it. Dispatch audio caught what happened before officers even cleared the building: The shooter had been neutralized, possibly by a father at the school. Texas Democrat and seminarian James Talarico just sat across from a Catholic voter at a CNN town hall and told her the Bible is silent on abortion. She didn’t let it slide. Jody Hunt, a self-described one-issue Catholic voter, was asking how she could trust him to protect the most innocent. Talarico’s answer: “We’re both Christians, and the Bible is silent on the issue of abortion.” He argued that they could still find common ground by reducing unplanned pregnancies through other policy levers. She pointed to the Ten Commandments and “Thou shalt not kill.” She added that Catholics take real insult when people claim the Bible has nothing to say on the subject. Talarico responded that if he believed abortion was murder and violated the Commandments, he wouldn’t support it. This is the same candidate who has repeatedly used his faith to defend abortion access, including past claims that Jesus never talked about it and that the Bible is silent. The latest Marist poll of Texas likely voters just dropped, and the Senate race is a dead heat. Democrat James Talarico is at 47%, Republican Ken Paxton at 45%. Independents are breaking for Talarico at 52%, while a majority of the same voters still think Paxton is going to win the seat anyway. That gap between the numbers and the expectation is the real story here. Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is holding a 49-45 edge over Gina Hinojosa for governor among likely voters, with seven in 10 Texans convinced the incumbent will win. The generic congressional ballot shows Republicans up five points. But Trump’s job approval in Texas is upside down at 46% approve to 54% disapprove, and 43% of likely voters say their family finances have gotten worse over the last year.
