Part 2 of our Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials interviews. If you haven’t listened to part 1, I recommend checking it out. Our first two interviews are both with racers on electric motorcycles, but they are completely different. First up is Rennie Scaysbrook who is riding the fully faired Lightning motorcycle with a potential of 250+ mph. He has raced at Isle of Man and Pikes Peak, but this is his first time at Bonneville. He shares with us his first experiences on the salt. Next up we sit down with Kit and Bear on the Zero with a sidecar. This is their 2nd time at Bonneville, and they are feeling good about the 4 new speed records they set. But of course none of this would happen without the leadership of Delvene Reber. There are only a few places on this planet where you can go as fast as you can and try set a land speed record, and the Bonneville Salt Flats is the most iconic of those places. With 7 miles of nothing by flat white ground, racing and records have been happening here for over a decade. At the BMST you will see everything from 50cc minibikes to 3000+cc streamliners, all pushing the boundaries of what a motorcycle can and should be able to do. And with the Rung What Ya Brung class, you might even see a Buddy 125 scooter putting down the course (hint hint). Liza and Neal spent the week there, hosting the spectator tent, helping teams out, and coming up with good bad ideas. In this episode, Neal talks about his first experience on the salt, and how it felt to push a buddy scooter to it’s limits. Liza talks to Utah Matt about his first time at the salt flats, and Detroit talks about his first time ever riding a Buell as part of the Buell Brothers Racing Team. Elspeth Beard has become a household name in the motorcycle world, but it hasn’t always been that way. Back in 1982 she headed off on her around the world motorcycle journey, returning home years later and resuming her life in England as an architect and then a mother. It wasn’t until 2017, when her book came out, that the world would come to know Elspeth for her motorcycle journey. We were fortunate to interview her in early 2017 before the book’s release, and then again in 2018 after she had become the legend we know of her today. The Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials will be Aug 23rd to 27th this year, and we will be there. Back in 2019 we had the opportunity to interview Erin Sills about her experience setting records on the salt. She has set 45 land speed records, has multiple Guinness World Records, and her BMW S1000RR is currently on display in the Smithsonian. She brought along her Hunter Sill Racing teammate Trev Richter, who is also chasing records on the salt, and they both have some amazing stories to share. We’ve paired this interview with another from 2019, this time with Stacie B. London of Triple Nickle Racing. Stacie has also set a record, but not quite as fast as Erin. She races on a 1967 Harley Davidson Aermacchi, which is why Bonneville is so great. You can take any bike from any era, and if you can make it go faster than the last person in the same category, you can set a record too.
