At 22, Miguel Bautista was so sick that his 75-year-old grandmother had to feed him and help him bathe. He experienced debilitating fatigue, brain fog, heart palpitations, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. After seeing dozens of specialists, his tests kept coming back normal. He was a medical mystery, and no one seemed to have answers. Eventually, he landed in the ICU and was ready to give up. Then a psychiatrist reviewing his records identified something the tests hadn’t revealed: his nervous system was stuck in survival mode. Learning to regulate it became the turning point. Within a month of working with that doctor, Miguel went from bedridden to walking on his own and leaving the hospital. Today, he exercises, travels, and helps others navigate their own recovery journeys. So what did that doctor see that everyone else had missed? In this episode of Food Heals, Allison Melody sits down with Miguel, founder of CFS Recovery, to explore his experience with chronic fatigue and the turning point that helped him rebuild his life: understanding his nervous system and learning to move out of survival mode. Miguel shares the three pillars he teaches, why constantly pushing harder can backfire, and how he approached symptoms with less fear. Allison opens up about her own experience with functional freeze after losing her parents, financial security, and sense of safety. She also shares how her rescue beagle Dolly is learning to feel safe, one small experience at a time. In this conversation, we explore: • Miguel’s journey from being bedridden to reclaiming his independence.• The frustration of feeling seriously unwell while tests show nothing abnormal.• Fight, flight, freeze, and what it can feel like to stay in survival mode.• Miguel’s three pillars: understanding what’s happening, responding to symptoms, and gradually building capacity.• Neuroplasticity, repetition, and the practice of creating a sense of safety.• Why community and support matter when recovery feels lonely.• The resources Miguel offers people navigating chronic fatigue, long COVID, and related symptoms. Plus, Miguel shares a free Recovery Roadmap Protocol for Food Heals listeners, including his Recovery Stage Identifier and a personalized recovery report.
