The Sweepers of Uden

During the mid-1970s, law enforcement agencies across the world recorded an extraordinary number of reported UFO sightings, many of which would go on to capture the public imagination. Some became so deeply embedded in popular culture that the towns and cities in which they occurred remain synonymous with alleged extraterrestrial activity to this day. Yet amongst these widely publicised encounters were others that were quietly forgotten, despite involving testimony and circumstances that appeared to warrant greater attention. One such incident unfolded in a small town in the eastern Netherlands, where a series of extraordinary events would leave witnesses struggling to explain what they had encountered. Join us as we recount the curious case of the Sweepers of Uden.   Ka’Chava: Embrace your salty side with the delicious new Salted Caramel flavour! Advances in DNA analysis and facial recognition technology have made it increasingly difficult for unidentified victims to remain anonymous. But for much of the twentieth century, investigators had far fewer resources at their disposal, and countless individuals whose identities could not be established were assigned little more than a generic name in official records. Some would remain unidentified for decades, their personal histories lost and the circumstances of their deaths shrouded in mystery. In this episode, we examine one such story, involving an unidentified man whose fate would puzzle investigators for many years, and who would become known simply as the Moxee ‘John Doe’.   Ollie: Feed the obsession! The Haunting of Bill Vaile   For as long as human beings have told stories of the supernatural, there have been accounts of malevolent entities that appear to take pleasure in tormenting the living. Forces said to manipulate and intimidate their victims, gradually wearing them down until their lives become consumed by fear. Most such tales belong to folklore, their origins lost to the passage of time. But occasionally, similar claims emerge in the modern world. In this episode, we explore an account of this alleged phenomenon, in which an unsuspecting man claimed he was deliberately chosen to become the host of a demonic entity. Join us, as we recount the haunting of Bill Vaile.   Forkful: Fresh, chef-cooked meals without the prep or clean-up. We have previously explored cases in which entire families have been lost under mysterious circumstances, including the murders of the Miyazawa family in Setagaya and the disappearance of Bobby and Sherrilyn Jamison, who vanished with their daughter in October 2009. This week, we turn to France, where a doctor and his two young children disappeared during a sailing trip in September 1999. But as investigators began retracing their movements, they uncovered evidence suggesting that something terrible had happened before the family ever set sail. Was this a tragic case of family annihilation, or had something even more sinister taken place? Just what happened to the Godard family?   Chime: Make your money work harder with fee-free banking. Of the many cryptids said to inhabit the North American continent, few have featured in as many reported encounters as Michigan’s infamous Dogman. For well over a century, witnesses across the state have described remarkably similar encounters with a large, werewolf-like creature, often recounting its appearance in striking detail. Yet despite the consistency of these reports, the true nature and origins of the entity remain a mystery. However, in 2017, a disturbing incident occurred which appeared to suggest an entirely new possibility regarding where these creatures might come from.   Dose: Give your liver the daily support it deserves. In many reported encounters with UFOs, those involved emerge from the experience apparently unharmed, suffering no lasting physical effects from what they claim to have witnessed. A smaller number of cases, however, tell a very different story. Some witnesses have reported developing sudden illnesses or unexplained injuries shortly after coming into close proximity with unidentified objects. Such symptoms would feature prominently in a bewildering series of incidents reported across northern Brazil towards the end of 1977. Events involving frightened communities, mysterious lights and numerous alleged injuries, which eventually attracted the attention of the Brazilian military. An investigation that would become known as Operation Prato.   Turn your idea into a real business. In 1954, a European businessman arrived in Japan aboard an international flight, carrying documents that appeared to confirm his identity and extensive history of overseas travel. There was, however, one significant problem. The country which had issued his passport did not exist. The traveller himself seemed equally bewildered, insisting that his homeland was a centuries-old nation recognised throughout the world. What followed would become the basis of one of the strangest stories ever to emerge from post-war Japan. And decades later, some believe the mystery of the Man from Taured could provide evidence that other realities exist alongside our own.   Head to https://forkfulmeals.com/bedtime for 50%off your first order today!   MUSIC Tracks used by kind permission of Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0   Tracks used by kind permission of CO.AG Learn more about your ad choices. In previous episodes, we have explored a number of alleged encounters involving animals of extraordinary and seemingly impossible proportions. These have included cases in which witnesses claim to have been attacked by enormous wolves, oversized sharks, and spiders considerably larger than any recognised species. This week, we will be adding another creature to this disturbing collection of oversized predators. One whose enormous wingspan and aggressive behaviour have terrified those unfortunate enough to cross its path. A mysterious creature that has become known over time by one particularly ominous name; The Flying Terror.   Upgrade your everyday with Quince. Following the end of the Cold War, numerous incidents once buried within classified military records have gradually entered the public domain, some of which continue to defy explanation. These include disturbing accounts of soldiers confronted by bizarre and seemingly hostile entities, whose appearance bore little resemblance to anything recognisably human. Alongside our sister channel and podcast, Wartime Stories, we have already explored several such encounters. In this episode, we turn our attention to a mysterious entity encountered at an isolated military installation, known to those unfortunate enough to cross its path as the Hard Stand Monster.   Join the millions who are already banking fee free with America’s #1 Choice for Banking. In December of 1978, an Italian security guard was discovered by his colleagues in a visibly distressed and emotional state, claiming that he had been abducted by extra-terrestrial beings. Those who rushed to his aid that day could have had no inkling that this extraordinary incident would prove to be only the beginning. Over the years that followed, he would allege that he had been taken against his will on numerous further occasions, each encounter seemingly stranger than the last. More remarkably still, a number of independent witnesses would eventually come forward, claiming to have observed events that appeared to support his astonishing account.   Ollie. Feed the Obsession.
