What is Sin?

And Also With You is a podcast about reclaiming an ancient Christian faith for modern Christian life, helmed by two millennial women Episcopal priests and moms (Rev. Lizzie McManus-Dail and Rev. Laura Di Panfilo). For our fourth season we are diving deep into SIN, EVIL, and DEATH, and we're starting out with a bang: what is the sin of Christian Nationalism?  The theology of MAGA Christian nationalism has nuances, but the connective tissue is this: the world is not safe, and God must be defended from many, many enemies — and when God is defended on earth, God will reign over His chosen children with love, while exacting vengeance on everyone else. It is explicitly patriarchal even as it can empower women in positions of prestige and leadership, provided they are still “under” a man in some way. MAGA Christian nationalism creates communal identity based not so much on what Christian nationalists have in common, but on what they are against and, therefore, whom they must defeat. But while MAGA Christian nationalism offered a tempting promise, its popularity is actually the self-consuming dragon ... and this is the nature of sin, evil, and death. What a weird and hard and scary time it is to be a queer person, and what a confusing time for both queer people and allies to understand alike to think through the relationship between the Christian faith and queerness, when so much is being said by Christians against queer and trans people.  And yet, queer and trans and non-binary and gay and lesbian and bi Christians exist and more than arguments for our rights to exist,  more than scriptural and theological underpinning for our legitimacy and our being made in the image of God, and certainly more than our flush assimilation into the structure and life of the church as it is and has been, gay and queer and trans people have unique and important faith and unique and important vocations within the church.  We are joined by the Rev. What does Rage Against the Machine and motherly images of God have to do with a 14th century saint?  Turns out ... a LOT. We are (finally) doing one of the MOST requested episodes ever -- diving deep into the question "Who is Saint Julian of Norwich???"
