In May, 1934, an anonymous letter arrives at Horncastle Police Station in Lincolnshire. The letter tells detectives that they need to investigate the death of Arthur Major, a local lorry driver who was reported to have died of natural causes. “In the name of the law, I beg you to analyse the contents of his stomach,” it says.
