EPISODE 2: The Informal Interview

Today's participant is looking for a seat at the table where the big decisions are made. She feels like the environment she works in is stopping her from being heard and she feels excluded. Together with Wies she realises that the efficient negotiations she has been engaging in at home with her partner, at the kitchen table, could also inspire her approach at work. Wies also tell us why the standard negotiations opportunities at work, such as performance reviews are not the only times we can voice both opportunities and issues, and we learn how we can have a mindset of negotiations on an ongoing basis.

How do you create a constructive and positive environment around your negotiations? Today's participant works for a startup, and her boss tends to take every salary increase quite personal, since he feels like the money is coming from his pocket. She would like to learn how to avoid the stress and negative emotion generated each time she is going into a negotiation with her boss. Wies will introduce her to the concept of "expanding the pie" and ways to creating a win-win scenario for both sides.

Today’s participant has been with the same company for her entire career. She’s grateful for the opportunities she’s been given, but she feels quite passive and not in charge of her career. She is therefore contemplating looking for a new job externally, even though she likes the company she is at right now. Wies will help her take a more active approach, and will challenge her mindset about asking.

Today’s participant has had an emotional clash with her boss. She is shaken by it, because it doesn’t seem to be just a personal matter, but there seem to be sexist issues at play, too. As a result, she has been avoiding her boss, but that isn’t a sustainable solution. She has come to Wies to find a way forward. She is worried her own lingering emotions around this will influence the conversation they will need to have. How can she speak with him and resume a positive relationship with him?

How do you convince a new employer to hire you in times of COVID? Today’s anonymous participant got fired because of COVID in the first months of the pandemic. She has now found the perfect company that she would like to work for, and she’s coming into the negotiation session wondering how she can make the best possible first impression during an informal coffee conversation she has organised with somebody working at the company.
