This time it was the disappearance of two little girls, best friends who were playing together in a park in Brighton. On the evening of October 9, 1986, two nine-year-old girls, Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway failed to return home. The girls were last spotted playing together in Wild Park shortly before twilight. Both of the girls were afraid of the dark. A large search for the two commenced that evening around dinner time and continued into the night. A large park with foggy, pitch black conditions proved to be extremely difficult. London saw a very similar uptick in crimes against women and child as well. By the autumn of 1978, Brighton and the wider Sussex area were already gripped by fear. Reports in the press asked how many potential sex attackers might be prowling the streets of Sussex during the long, dark nights of that coming winter. Violence against women, sexual assaults, attacks after dark had become urgent public concerns. Then Margaret Frame went missing walking home through Stanmer Park after a work shift.
